Mack and Rineer Highlight First Day at Bison Open

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University women's track and field senior Anna Mack (Olyphant, Pa./Lakeland) and freshman Alli Rineer (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) highlighted the team's first day of competition at the Bison Open hosted by Bucknell University in Gerhard Fieldhouse on Friday.
After placing fourth in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles, Mack came back to take second-place in the finals with a time of 9.38 seconds, fourth-tenths faster than her prelim time. Rineer, one of Shippensburg's top cross country runners in the fall, came in sixth in the 5,000-meter run with a mark of 19:14.74.
Other Lady Raider qualifiers in the 60-meter hurdles included freshmen Courtney Kostich (Thompsontown, Pa./East Juniata) and Kristina Grussenmeyer (Holland, Pa./Council Rock South) who placed 10th and 12th, respectively, a mere two-tenths of second apart.
Freshman Denai Thompson (Harleysville, Pa./Norristown) placed 20th in the 60-meter hurdles prelims with a time of 10.72 seconds.
In the women's 200-meter dash, freshman Siobhan Richards (York Haven, Pa./York Haven) led four Shippensburg competitors with a time of 27.62 seconds, placing her 13th, just 0.14 seconds out of the final qualifying spot. Freshman Alisa Murray (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), junior Julie Riccardo (Exton, Pa./Bishop Shanahan) and senior Dana Schmidt (Nanty Glo, Pa./Central Cambria) also had top-20 finishes for the Lady Raiders.
The only other competitors for Shippensburg on day one were fellow freshmen and volleyball teammates Ashleigh Helfrick (Greencastle, Pa./James Buchanan) and Leslie Serrano (LeMasters, Pa./James Buchanan) who took part in the pentathlon. Helfrick place ninth with 2,754 points and Serrano was 15th with 2,374.
Serrano placed seventh and eighth in the shot put and long jump while Helfrick finished no lower than 13th in any of the five events and earning a fifth-place finish in the 800-meter run.
In other action from Friday, senior Flo Yerokun (Perkiomenville, Pa./Spring-Ford) and junior Megan Schweighofer (Tyler Hill, Pa./Honesdale) competed in University Park, Pa., at the prestigous and highly-competitive Penn State National Open with Yerokun finishing the 60 meter prelims in a time of 8.05 seconds. Schweighofer did not place in the weight throw.
The Lady Raiders will conclude competition in both the Bison Open and Penn State National Open on Saturday.
