Meisel Advances to Semifinals at ITA East Regionals

BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg University women's tennis junior Melinda
Meisel (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) won four matches and advanced
to the semifinals of the "B" singles
draw at the ITA East Regional hosted at Bloomsburg University this past weekend.
Meisel won her first two matches 6-2, 6-2 and advanced to face Lavina Voica of Queens College in the third round. Meisel took the match 7-5, 6-1 and then outlasted Marcia Gilbridge of Bentley College, 7-6, 7-5 to reach the semis. However, her run ended against No. 2-seeded Chiori Koike of New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Koike won the first set 6-1, but Meisel managed to stay close in the second before Koike edged out a 7-5 victory for the match.
Junior Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) also advanced deep into the tournament for the Lady Raiders. She won her first match 6-2, 6-0 over Adelphi University's Missy Kutner. Perugini edged Kara Fisher of Millersville University, 2-6, 6-1, 1-0 in the second round before falling to Jessica Brown of California (Pa.), 6-3, 6-1.
Seniors Danielle Kennedy (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown) and Karen Jensenius (York, Pa./Northeast) each won their opening round matches before falling in the second.
The Lady Raiders’ only competitor in "A" singles was senior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer). She opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the second round after receiving a bye in the first. Her tournament, however, was cut short by Julia Doci of NJIT, 6-2, 6-0.
In "A" doubles action, the team of Pavilionyte and Perugini received a bye in the first round, and topped Concord College 8-4 in the second. Kutztown University, though, ended the tandem’s run with an 8-5 triumph in the quarterfinals.
The three Shippensburg teams competing in "B" doubles action failed to register a victory.
The Lady Raiders return to action on Wednesday, September 28 with a road trip to Carlisle, Pa., to face NCAA Division III Dickinson College.
