Women's Tennis Picks Up First Win, 7-2 Against ESU

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's tennis team earned its first victory of the 2005-06 season with a 7-2 decision over East Stroudsburg University in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover match Friday evening at Robb Sports Complex.

The Lady Raiders (1-1) swept all three doubles matches and won four of the six singles flights, including No. 1 through No. 4. The veteran leaders for Shippensburg proved to be the difference as senior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer) and junior Melinda Meisel (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) both won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively.

Junior Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) and sophomore Karen Jensenius (York, Pa./Northeastern) were also winners with Perugini earning a point with a win at No. 3 singles while Jensenius won at No. 4 singles.

Pavilionyte won in straight sets for the second time in as many matches this season without allowing her opponent to win a single-game, defeating Shana Morris, 6-0, 6-0. Meisel, Perugini and Jensenius also won in straight sets, clinching the victory for the Lady Raiders.

In doubles, the team of Pavilionyte and Perugini continued their strong play together, defeating Morris and Mandie Rutt, 8-3. After Jensenius and Meisel won convincingly at No. 2 doubles, the freshman team of Kristen Herman and Kathryn Hoover edged out a hard-fought victory at No. 3, winning 8-8 (9-7) over Allison Kolubinsky and Amanda Wascowich.

Shippensburg travels to Kutztown University in its second consecutive PSAC crossover match on Tuesday.
