Shippensburg Loses Season-Opener to Philadelphia University

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's tennis team dropped its first match of the year on Saturday, 5-4, at Philadelphia University. The Lady Raiders won three of the six matches in singles competition and one of the three matches in doubles.

Junior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer) and freshman Karen Jensenius (York, Pa./Northeastern) were double winners for Shippensburg (0-1). Pavilionyte won at No. 1 singles, defeating Madeline Smith 6-3, 6-1 while Jensenius was a winner at No. 5 doubles, downing Kathryn Stracquantanio 6-2, 6-2. Pavilionyte and Jensenius teamed up to defeat Smith and Amanda Frantz in doubles competition, 8-5.

Freshman Shana Ruff (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) was also a winner at No. 6 singles for the Lady Raiders, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 over Claire Shanley.

Philadelphia (3-0) has won three-straight to start the season.

Shippensburg remains in Philadelphia to play Lincoln University on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
