Pavilionyte and Perguini Winners in Season-Opener

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Senior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer) and junior Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) were both winners as the Shippensburg University women's tennis team opened the fall portion of its 2005-06 schedule with a 6-3 loss to Shepherd University at Robb Sports Complex on Wednesday.

Pavilionyte won convincingly at No. 1 singles, defeating Catherine Daniel 6-0, 6-0. Last year, Pavilionyte had a record of 7-2 overall for the Lady Raiders at No. 1 singles. At No. 3 singles, Perugini beat Erin Wells 6-1, 6-4.

At No. 1 doubles, the team of Pavilionyte and Perugini, defeated Daniel and Meredith Scaggs, 8-6 for Shippensburg's lone point in doubles. Shepherd (1-0) won two doubles matches and four of the six singles flights.

The team of sophomore Karen Jensenius (York, Pa./Northeastern) and junior Melinda Meisel (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) nearly won at No. 2 doubles, but fell to the team of Wells and Jessi Clarke, 8-6.

The Lady Raiders (0-1) finished the 2004-05 season with a record of 4-5 overall and 1-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division.

Shippensburg returns to the court on Saturday, September 17 at home against East Stroudsburg University beginning at 1:00 p.m.
