Shippensburg Earns First PSAC Win Against Indiana (Pa.)

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women’s tennis team earned its first win of the spring season and its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) victory on Saturday with a 5-4 victory over Indiana University (Pa.).

The Lady Raiders (4-5, 1-3 PSAC West) and IUP split the singles flights, but two doubles victories sealed the win for Shippensburg.

Junior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer) and sophomore Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) defeated Yvonne Niedebracht and Kim Jones, 8-6, at No. 1 doubles. Freshman Karen Jensenius (York, Pa./Northeastern) and sophomore Melinda Meisel (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) were also winners at No. 2 doubles, defeating Aurora Ellerbach and Mary Pierandozzi, 8-4.

In singles competition, Meisel defeated Hillary Hughes, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2. The Lady Raiders also won at No. 5 and No. 6, with Jensenius winning, 6-3, 6-2 over Laura Henderson and freshman Shana Ruff (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) defeating Jones of Indiana (Pa.) (8-5, 2-2 PSAC West), 6-0, 6-2.

Shippensburg hosts Kutztown University on Wednesday, April 20 in a make up match from Saturday, April 2 that was rescheduled because of rain. Play begins at 3:00 p.m at Robb Sports Complex.
