Tennis Wins Second Straight with 8-1 Victory at West Chester

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's tennis team picked up its second-straight victory and its third in four matches with an 8-1 triumph in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Crossover match at West Chester University on Tuesday.

Since opening its spring schedule on March 18, the Lady Raiders have posted a 4-2 record, moving their season mark to 5-6.

On Tuesday, the Lady Raiders swept all three singles matches and took five of six in singles action.

Ship's top tandem of senior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer) and junior Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) earned their fifth win in their last six matches by blanking West Chester‚s No. 1 team, 8-0.

Junior Melinda Meisel (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) and sophomore Karen Jensenius (York, Pa./Northeastern) teamed at No. 2 doubles up to win 8-4, and freshmen Kristen Herman (Worchster, Pa./Christopher Dock) and Katie Hoover (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) notched and 8-6 victory in No. 3 doubles.

In singles action, Pavilionyte improved her individual season record to 7-2 after topping Amanda Zern, 6-0, 6-0. Meisel earned a 6-0, 6-1 win over Jen Litchman at No. 2 singles, and Perugini topped Katie Edwards by a final of 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.

At No. 4 singles, Jensenius notched a 6-1, 6-0 win and Herman, at No. 6 singles, earned Ship‚s final point with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Megan Doyle.

West Chester's lone point came at No. 5 singles where Jessica Toth topped senior Allison Bollinger (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco), 6-1. 6-1.

The Lady Raiders head back into PSAC West action on Thursday, April 13, as they take on Slippery Rock at Robb Sports Complex. The match is schedule to begin at 1 p.m.
