Women's Tennis Drops Third-Straight, Fall at Slippery Rock

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Junior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Christopher) lost her first singles, dual match of the year on Saturday afternoon as the Slippery Rock University women’s tennis team edged out a 5-4 victory over Shippensburg University.

The Lady Raiders (3-5, 0-3 PSAC West) lost their third-straight spring match and remain winless in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division play.

Shippensburg was a winner in one of the three doubles flights and had victories in three of the five contested singles flights before Ashley Michaux defeated Pavilionyte at No. 1 singles to seal the win for Slippery Rock (5-9, 1-2 PSAC West).

Danielle Kennedy and freshman Shana Ruff (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) won convincingly at No. 3 doubles, defeating Heather Webb and Jamie Lemoncelli, 8-2, the duo’s first conference win of the season and second overall.

Ruff was also a winner at No. 6 singles with a victory against Lemoncelli in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1. Ruff currently leads the team this season in singles victories with nine. She is also a team-best 2-1 in PSAC Western Division matches.

Other winners for Shippensburg included sophomore Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) at No. 3 singles, 7-5, 6-1 over Kate Ingram and Karen Jensenius (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2 against Heather Webb. The win for both Perugini and Jensenius was their first in Western Division matches this year.

Shippensburg hosts Indiana University (Pa.) next Saturday in its spring home-opener beginning at 4:00 p.m.
