Women's Tennis Picks Up Third Win This Spring At IUP, 7-2

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg women's tennis team won all but two matches on Saturday in earning its first Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division victory of the season with a 7-2 decision at Indiana (Pa.). With the victory, the Lady Raiders, who have won three out their five matches this spring, moved into fourth-place in the conference standings.

Shippensburg (4-6, 1-2 PSAC West) won five of the six singles matches, including victories from No. 1 through No. 4. Senior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer) ran her record to 6-2 at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-0 victory over Andriana Nunic while junior Melinda Meisel (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) and junior Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) each won at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.

Meisel and Perugini each won in straight sets with Meisel defeating Aurora Ellerbach 6-2, 6-2 and Perugini sweeping Laura Henderson, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Karen Jensenius (York, Pa./Northeastern) also won in straight sets over Laura DeBerardinis, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4 singles as did freshman Kristen Herman (Worchster, Pa./Christopher Dock) at No. 6 over Petra Skrabar, 6-1, 6-0.

In doubles, the team of Pavilionyte and Perugini won for the seventh time this season and for the fourth time in the their last five matches with an 8-2 victory over Ellerbach and Henderson. At No. 3, the team of Herman and freshman Kathryn Hoover (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) defeated Jessica Foor and Julia Buck in a tightly contested match, 9-8 (7-3).

IUP (1-5, 0-2 PSAC West) picked up its only two wins of the afternoon at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles where Foor beat senior Allison Bollinger (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco), 6-2, 6-2 and the team of Nunic and DeBerardinis edged Jensenius and Meisel, 8-4.

Shippensburg travels to West Chester for a PSAC-crossover match on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
