Women's Tennis Drops Second-Straight Match, Loses at Cal

CALIFORNIA, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's tennis team dropped its second-straight match of the spring season on Tuesday, losing 7-2 at California University (Pa.). It was also the Lady Raiders second consecutive loss in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division, after last week's 7-2 loss at Clarion University.

Shippensburg (3-4, 0-2 PSAC West) won two of the six singles matches, but were swept at all three doubles flights. Junior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer) improved her record to 4-1 this season with a win in straight sets at No. 1 singles for the Lady Raiders, 6-2, 6-4 over Olga Gonzalez.

Freshman Shanna Ruff (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) was the only other winner for Shippensburg after she won at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-1 against Daniella Zevallos.

The team of Pavilionyte and sophomore Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) almost pulled off a win at No. 1 doubles, but were edged out by Gonzalez and Linda Escobedo, 8-6. The duo falls to 1-2 this year, 0-2 in the spring season.

California (Pa.) (15-6, 2-0 PSAC West) snapped a two-match losing streak while the Lady Raiders fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the Western Division in the spring season.

Shippensburg returns to action on Saturday, traveling to Slippery Rock University for a match that begins at Noon.
