California (Pa.) Sweeps Women's Tennis in PSAC West Match

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women's tennis team was swept for the second time this season, losing all nine matches on Tuesday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex in a 9-0 loss to California University (Pa.).

For the Vulcans (12-7, 2-0 PSAC West), it was their seventh-straight victory of the season and seventh by sweep.

California (Pa.) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches. At No. 1, the team of Inga Chilingaryan and Melissa Anderson defeated senior Lina Pavilionyte (Vilnius, Lithuania/Vilnius Sv. Kristofer) and junior Nicole Perugini (Reading, Pa./Holy Name) 8-4, handing Pavilionyte and Perugini their first loss this spring, ending a three-match win streak.

At No. 2 doubles, the team of junior Melinda Meisel (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) and freshman Katie Detwiler (Penn Argyl, Pa./Penn Argyl) lost by the same score to Jessica Brown and Katie Anderson. It was the first time this season that Meisel and Detwiler had been paired together and just the second doubles match of the year for Detwiler.

In the third doubles match, the freshman team of Kristen Herman (Worchster, Pa./Christopher Dock) and Katie Hoover (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) fell to Lauren Hovey and Lindsay Mathieson, 8-1.

In singles competition, Pavilionyte suffered her first loss of the spring and her first match since September 20, a span of five matches, with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat to Chilingaryan who entered the match ranked No. 46 in Division II. Pavilionyte is currently 5-2 this season.

Perugini fought a tightly-contested match at No. 3 singles before losing to Melissa Anderson, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 while Herman nearly pulled off a win at No. 5 against Hovey before losing 6-4, 6-4.

Shippensburg (3-6, 0-2 PSAC West) returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Indiana University (Pa.) for a match at 11:00 a.m.
