Kuntzmann Named PSAC Rookie of the Year, Four Earn All-PSAC Honors
Nov. 1, 2006
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Following the Shippensburg women's soccer team's first PSAC tournament appearance since 2002 and just the second in school history, four Lady Raiders, all of which are freshmen, were honored as All-PSAC Eastern Division selections on Wednesday. Also, Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) was selected as the PSAC Eastern Division Rookie of the Year.
The four all-conference selections were the most for Shippensburg since 2004 and Kuntzmann was the first Lady Raider to be named Rookie of the Year since Meredith Yakscoe-Markle in 2002. Kuntzmann also landed a spot on the First Team while Rachel Jeffrey (Allison Park/Hampton), Katie Masterson (Harrisburg/Central Dauphin) and Brittany Oncay (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) were all named to the Second Team.
Kuntzmann led the team and ranked fourth in the conference in scoring with 12 goals and six assists for a total of 30 points. Her 12 goals her total was the most by a Shippensburg player since Nikki Kegerreis scored 16 in 2002.
Jeffrey finished the season with 11 points, on four goals and three assists, which ranked third on the team. She also ranked second on the team with two game-winning goals.
Oncay and Masterson both served as key cogs for a Lady Raider defensive unit that allowed 1.52 goals per game and tallied six shutouts, which tied for fourth-most in the PSAC. Masterson tallied one goal and one assist for three points on the season while Oncay was the only Lady Raider to start in all 20 games.
Under first-year head coach Rob Fulton, Shippensburg finished the season with a 9-9-2 overall record and a 6-4-2 mark in the PSAC Eastern Division. The Lady Raiders finished the regular-season third in the division and despite dropping a 1-0 decision to Kutztown in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Women's Soccer Championship, the Lady Raiders totaled three-more conference wins than they had a year ago.
