INDIANA, Pa. - Junior Beth Long (Berwyn/Conestoga) tied her career-high with 15 saves against Indiana (Pa.), but the Shippensburg women’s soccer team could not hold off the feisty Crimson Hawks, falling 5-4 Thursday evening in an offensive showdown.

The Lady Raiders (7-11) have now totaled 10 goals in two games after scoring just 20 in the team’s first 16 games of the season.

Shippensburg was out-shot by a 29-18 margin, forcing Long to make eight saves in the first half. It is the most shots allowed by the Lady Raiders this season and the fourth time this year the team has relinquished more than 20 shots against.

Meanwhile, the 19 shots totaled by Shippensburg is the most put forth by the team this season.

IUP (10-5) led 3-1 at halftime following first-half tallies from Carina Honeygosky, Sarah Romasco and Ray Schreiner, but the Lady Raiders rallied to take a 4-3 lead in the 79th minute.

Freshman Alison Dowdrick (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) scored in the 51st minute off an assist from freshman Lisa Findley (Camp Hill/Cumberland Valley) to pull the Lady Raiders within one, 3-2, before sophomore Rachel Jeffrey (Allison Park/Hampton) delivered her fourth goal of the season in the 63rd minute to tie the game.

Shippensburg held a lead into the 83rd minute following the second goal of the season from junior Kellye Von Stetten (Landisville/Hempfield) that was assisted by junior Lauren Beaner (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley).

However, Kim Kowalski tied the game in the 83rd minute and Schreiner connected for her second goal of the game and the game-winner in the 87th minute to clinch the one-goal victory for Indiana (Pa.).

Sophomore Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) scored the lone marker of the first half for the Lady Raiders, her sixth goal of the season.

The Lady Raiders will host California (Pa.) on Senior Day next Wednesday in the final home game of the season for Shippensburg. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
