Lady Raiders End Seven-Game Losing Streak With 6-1 Victory Over Mansfield
Oct. 15, 2007
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The
Shippensburg women’s soccer team ended its seven-game losing streak
on Monday afternoon with an impressive victory over Mansfield, defeating the
Mountaineers 6-1 at David See Field. The victory
was the first for the Lady Raiders against a PSAC Eastern Division
opponent since opening the season with a 4-0 conference record.
Shippensburg (7-10, 5-7 PSAC East) opened the scoring in the 10th minute,
when sophomore Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) delivered her fifth
goal of the season by hammering in a rebound off an initial shot from junior
Kellye Von Stetten (Landisville/Hempfield).
The tally ended a goal-scoring drought of 336:59 in which the Lady Raiders had gone seven halves of soccer without putting a ball into the back of the net. Ironically, Shippensburg would score again less than three minutes later, when sophomore Amanda Greenawalt (Landisville/Hempfield) finished a perfect through ball from senior Sarah Tagye (Exton/Downingtown East) that proved to be the game-winner.
Junior Beth Long (Berwyn/Conestoga) posted another strong performance in goal for the Lady Raiders, earning her sixth victory of the season. She made six saves in just under 63 minutes of action before being relieved by sophomore Jennifer Bledsoe (Erial, N.J./Timber Creek).
Junior Lauren Beaner (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) and freshman Alison Dowdrick (Lebanon/Cedar Crest) each delivered goals to give the Lady Raiders a 4-0 lead early in the second half. Greenawalt added another tally in the 71st minute and senior Mallory Skipp (Exton/Henderson) delivered her first goal since October 26, 2005 off a free kick to round out the scoring for Shippensburg.
The six goals scored by Shippensburg marked its largest scoring
output since Sept. 21, 2003, a span of 87 games. That day, the Lady
Raiders also defeated Mansfield, but by a 7-0 margin.
Shippensburg will play three crossover contests against the PSAC Western
Division to close out the 2007 season. The Lady Raiders will travel to
take on Indiana (Pa.) on Thursday.
