Beth Long Records 13 Saves in 1-0 Loss at No. 12 West Chester
Oct. 10, 2007
WEST CHESTER, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women’s soccer team suffered its sixth consecutive loss by one-goal on Wednesday, dropping a 1-0 road decision at No. 12-ranked West Chester. The Lady Raiders were attempting to sweep the series with the Golden Rams as Shippensburg handed West Chester its only loss of the season back on September 6 at David See Field.
Despite the team's first six-game losing streak since 1999, the Lady Raiders remain in fifth place in the PSAC Eastern Division standings. However, the Lady Raiders (6-9, 4-6 PSAC East) are on the verge of missing the PSAC Women's Soccer Championship as only the top three teams from each division advance to the playoffs.
Shippensburg needs to win its two remaining conference games against East Stroudsburg and Mansfield.
All six of the Lady Raiders' losses during the streak have come in the Eastern Division. The only victory for the team over the last month came in a 4-1 victory over Shepherd back on September 20 as Shippensburg has lost eight of its last nine games.
West Chester (12-1-2, 7-1-2 PSAC East) scored the lone goal of the game in the 21st minute when Rita Alton connected for her third goal of the season. The Golden Rams put forth a blistering offensive attack, firing 23 shots toward the Shippensburg net.
Junior Beth Long (Berwyn/Conestoga) kept the Lady Raiders in the game with a phenomenal performance, recording a season-high 13 saves. The mark is two short of her career-high that was set on Oct. 11, 2006 in a 1-1 tie against Bloomsburg.
Shippensburg will try to end its losing streak on Saturday when it travels to East Stroudsburg for another PSAC Eastern Division contest. Game time is 3:30 PM.
