Box Score

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women’s soccer team came within 23 seconds of extending its clash with Edinboro into a second overtime period, but a goal from Ashley Jones gave the visitors a 1-0 victory over the Lady Raiders on Saturday afternoon at David See Field.

Shippensburg (6-4) and Edinboro exchanged scoring opportunities all game and played excellent soccer for the duration of the contest, and each team nearly won the game in overtime before Jones’ goal.

Just one minute into the extra session, a shot from Edinboro’s Angie de Almeida rang off the post, while sophomore Rachael Jeffrey (Allison Park/Hampton) came inches away from ending the game just three minutes later, sending a shot just wide of the net off a through ball from senior Mallory Skipp (Exton/Henderson).

The contest was also very physical, with the teams combining for 23 fouls. It was the 23rd foul call that proved to be the difference, however, as Jones’ goal came on a free kick that sailed just over the reach of junior Beth Long (Berwyn/Conestoga).

Long recorded a phenomenal effort for Shippensburg, making seven saves in the contest. Five of her saves came in the final 55 minutes of action. She has now made 16 saves in her last three games.

While the territorial edge exchanged hands throughout the contest, Edinboro (5-2-2) made the most of its time in the offensive zone, recording an 11-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Shippensburg returns to action next Saturday, when the team begins its second round of PSAC Eastern Division play on the road at Millersville. Game time is at 1:00 PM.
