BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Despite being outshot 17-9, the Shippensburg women's soccer team emerged victorious on Wednesday with a 2-1 road win over the Bloomsburg Huskies behind two second-half goals from freshman Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham), who now leads the Lady Raiders with five goals thus far this season.

The victory now moves Shippensburg into sole possession of first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division with 10 points.

Shippensburg (4-1-1, 3-1-1 PSAC East) entered the contest in a a three-way tie for first place in the Eastern Division with Bloomsburg and Kutztown. The victory also marks the first win for the Lady Raiders over Bloomsburg since the 2002 season and just the second victory for Shippensburg on the road against the Huskies dating back to 1990. It is just the third victory overall for the Lady Raiders in the last 14 meetings between the two teams.

Just 5:51 into the contest, however, the outcome did not look as promising for Shippensburg. Bloomsburg sophomore Ashley Brucker gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead off an assist from freshman Kelly Modes. For the first half, the Lady Raiders were outshot 8-2, as sophomore Beth Long (Berwyn/Conestoga) was forced to make three saves.

After halftime, Kuntzmann led the offensive charge, scoring just 42 seconds into the second half to tie the game at 1-1 off an assist from freshman Sarah Youse (Kutztown/Kutztown). While Shippensburg only recorded five shots on goal for the entire game, the key to the victory was the ability of the Lady Raiders to finish on the few scoring opporunities that they recorded.

Kuntzmann gave Shippensburg the lead in 74th minute off another assist from Youse. Both of her goals came against Bloomsburg's Robin Gerber, who entered the game in relief of starter Brittany Moses.

Of the nine shots recorded by the Lady Raiders, Kuntzmann finished with six. Also adding shots were sophomore Kellye Von Stetten (Landisville/Hempfield) and freshmen Lauren Estrain (Olney, Md./Sherwood) and Leigh Mellon (Paoli/Great Valley). Long made two more saves in the second half to finish with five for the game.

The Lady Raiders return to action on Saturday at David See Field when they host the University of Bridgeport. Game time is at 4 p.m.
