Box Score
MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Shippensburg University women’s
soccer team extended its season-opening shutout streak to 180 minutes with
its second consecutive 1-0 victory, this time coming on the road against
the Mountaineers of Mansfield.
Shippensburg (2-0, 2-0 PSAC East) scored the lone goal of the game at 67:36 when sophomore Gayle Kuntzmann (Hatboro/Hatboro-Horsham) scored her first goal of the season off an assist from senior defender Sarah Tagye (Exton/Downingtown East).
For Tagye, the assist was particularly special, as it marks the first career point she has recorded in 60 games as a Lady Raider. The veteran defender has started in 50 contests over the course of three-plus seasons for Shippensburg and has been an integral figure for a strong Lady Raider defense.
Meanwhile, the goal marks the 13th tally that Kuntzmann has scored in 22 career games at Shippensburg. She tied for the team lead with sophomore Lauren Estrain (Olney, Md./Sherwood) by recording three shots on goal in Wednesday’s contest.
Another valuable contributor to Shippensburg’s success has been junior goalkeeper Beth Long (Berwyn/Conestoga), who recorded her second shutout of the season Wednesday and the eighth of her career. Long made six saves against the Mountaineers, giving her 12 over the course of the first two games.
The Lady Raiders also had to muster a flurry of activity in the second half as Mansfield peppered Shippensburg with 12 shots and five corner kicks.
Shippensburg will return this Saturday when the Lady Raiders travel to Slippery Rock. Game time is set for 1:00 PM from N. Kerr Thompson Stadium.
