SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -
The Shippensburg University women’s soccer team opened its regular season Saturday evening with a 1-0 victory in a PSAC East contest against local rival Millersville. It was the season opener for both teams.

Shippensburg (1-0-0, 1-0-0 PSAC East) was dominated statistically throughout the first half, not even recording a shot until the 62nd minute, when freshman Lisa Findley (Camp Hill/Cumberland Valley) had a shot blocked by Marauder goalkeeper Karrine Riggins.

Soon thereafter, the Lady Raiders connected on just their second shot of the game, when sophomore Lauren Beaner (Lancaster/Conestoga Valley) scored her first career goal and her second career point when she rifled a shot from just inside the box into the top left corner of the net to give Shippensburg a 1-0 lead.

Millersville (0-1-0, 0-1-0 PSAC East) dominated the first half, recording eight of its 11 shots in the opening 45 minutes and earning two corner kicks. With Beaner’s goal, however, the Lady Raiders began to mount offensive pressure in the second half, recording six corner kicks and out-shooting Millersville 6-3 over the final 45 minutes.

Millersville ended the game with an 11-6 advantage in shots but the Lady Raiders held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The two teams are known for its defensive struggles, and today’s game was no exception. Beaner’s goal ended a scoring drought between the two teams at David See Field that had lasted a total of 176:51. The last goal scored at David See Field between these two teams came on Sept. 20, 2005, when Kristen McGoldrick scored in the second overtime of a contest to give Shippensburg a 1-0 win. The two teams had played to a 0-0 tie at Shippensburg last season.

Junior Beth Long (Berwyn/Conestoga) was busy for the Lady Raiders in goal, finishing with six saves to earn her seventh career shutout. In three career contests against Millersville, Long has yet to allow a goal to the Marauders. Millersville has only scored one goal against Shippensburg in the last five meetings between the teams dating back to 2005.

Shippensburg will return to action Wednesday, August 29 when the team travels to Mansfield. Game time is at 4:00 PM.
