Apr. 29, 2006
SHIPPENSBURG , Pa. -
Just one year removed from a 1-14 record, the Shippensburg University lacrosse
team is heading to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Tournament
as a result of an 18-8 victory over Indiana (Pa.) on senior day at the
Robb Sports Complex on Saturday.
With the victory, the Lady Raiders improve to 8-7 overall and 6-6 in PSAC play.
Indiana finishes its season with a 3-14, 1-11 mark.
The 18 goals scored was a season-high for the Lady Raiders, and seniors Kim Hudicka (Media, Pa./Penncrest), Lauren Wells (Royersford, Pa./Spring Ford), Cristin Marron (Exton, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Kaitlin Keene (Baltimore, Md./Seton Keough), playing in their final game at Robb Sports Complex, combined for 14 of the team's 18 goals. Classmate Michelle Mangle (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) stopped eight shots to lead the Lady Raiders.
Hudicka led the way with a career-high eight goals, matching her previous career-high, which was set in the victory at East Stroudsburg yesterday. Hudicka now has 15 goals in the last two days and team-best 15 goals on the season.
Shippensburg jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, scoring the games' first seven goals, which included three from Wells and two from Hudicka.
Indiana's Mallory Zelawski scored IUP's first goal at 11:34 to cut the lead to 7-1. Hudicka answered three minutes later with a free position goal, but Zelawski tallied two more goals less than a minute apart to put the Ship lead at 8-3 with 7:17 on the clock.
But Hudicka finished the first half in a flurry, scoring two unassisted goals over the final 3:50 to give Ship a 10-3 at the half. Hudicka opened the second half with her fifth-straight goal 54 seconds into the second period.
From there, Ship would receive two more goals from Hudicka, a pair of scores from sophomore Kelly Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) and goals from junior Kristen Crutchfield (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and Marron. Also, sophomore Mallory Chambers found the back of the net with 5:13 remaining to record her first goal of the season.
Along with Hudicka's career day, Wells scored three goals and Marron scored two.
The Lady Raiders will enter the PSAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 1 seed West Chester on Tuesday, May 2.
