Apr. 28, 2006
EAST STROUDSBURG , Pa. -
Playing its third game of the week and second in as many days, the Shippensburg
women‚s lacrosse team keep its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference
(PSAC) championship hopes alive by doubling up East Stroudsburg with a
14-7 victory on Friday.
With a win over Indiana (Pa.) at home on Senior Day Saturday, the Lady Raiders
(7-7, 5-6 PSAC) will earn its second trip to the PSAC championship in the last
three seasons, earning the No. 4-seed.
Among those making their final appearance at home as a Lady Raider on Saturday
is senior Kim Hudicka (Media, Pa./Penncrest) who, after leaving the game at Millersville
on Thursday because of two yellow cards, came back to score seven goals on Friday
to increase her season total to 43.
Hudicka scored over half of the team‚s goals, including three in the first
half to help Shippensburg build a 6-2 halftime lead.
Senior Cristin Marron (Exton, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) added four goals in the
win and now has 108 for her career, leaving her one behind Kelly Ann Sims for
seventh on the school‚s career list. Sims totaled 109 from 1996-99.
Hudicka and Marron scored just 19 seconds apart to start the second half, increasing
the Lady Raiders' lead to six, 8-2, with 28:10 remaining.
However, East Stroudsburg (2-11, 1-10 PSAC) would mount a comeback with three-straight
goals, including back-to-back goals by Katie Fretz and one from Diana Ferguson,
to cut the lead to three, 8-5.
Undaunted, Hudicka would score three of the game‚s next five goals, four
of which were by Shippensburg, pushing the lead back to six, 12-6, with four
minutes remaining. Senior Joanna Cole (New Freedom, Pa./York Catholic) scored
with 58 seconds left and Marron added her fourth goal with 31 seconds remaining
to seal the seven-goal victory.
The Lady Raiders dominated the statistics as they were credited with a 42-10
advantage in shots, forcing goalie Julie Smith to make 29 saves, the sixth time
this season she has exceeded 20 saves in a game. Shippensburg senior Michelle
Mangle (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) was credited with three saves.
Shippensburg puts its PSAC championship fate on the line on Saturday against
Indiana (Pa.) at home beginning at Noon at Robb Sports Complex. Prior to the
game, the team will honor its eight seniors making their final appearance at
home.
