Leigh Mellon Scores a Career-High Four Goals in 13-7 Win Over East Stroudsburg
Apr. 23, 2007
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg women's lacrosse freshman Leigh Mellon (Paoli/Great Valley) scored a career-high four goals and junior Katie Irwin (Aston/Cardinal O'Hara) added three as the Lady Raiders moved into a tie for fourth-place in the PSAC with a 13-7 victory over East Stroudsburg Monday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
Shippensburg (7-8, 6-6 PSAC) is currently tied with Millersville for the fourth and final playoff berth into the 2007 PSAC Women's Lacrosse Championship following the Marauders' 25-3 victory over Slippery Rock on Sunday.
Mellon entered Monday's contest with five goals through 14 contests this season, but now has nine to go along with two assists for a total of 11 points. She scored the first two goals of the game for the Lady Raiders to give them a 2-1 advantage and a lead that they would never relinquish.
East Stroudsburg (3-10, 2-10 PSAC) opened the second half with a goal by Renee Maniscaldo to cut the lead to one, 6-5, but Shippensburg responded by scoring the game's next six-straight goals to take a commanding seven-goal lead at 12-5 with just over 13 minutes remaining.
Five different Lady Raiders scored during the run, including two by Mellon, the first of which came at 37:03 to start the streak.
Mellon and Irwin each netted two of Shippensburg's six goals in the first half as it built a 6-4 lead.
After the Warriors' leading scorer Katie Fretz scored at 9:24 to tie the game at 3-3, Irwin scored back-to-back goals to give Shippensburg a two-goal lead, 5-3 before Fretz added her second goal and Lady Raider sophomore Kelsey Browning (Sanatoga/Pottsgrove) tallied her ninth of the season.
Along with Irwin, Shippensburg junior Brita Paul (Salisbury, Md./James Bennett) also totaled three points on the afternoon with two second half goals and one assist.
The Lady Raiders outscored the Warriors 7-3 in a decisive second half after East Stroudsburg held an 8-3 margin in draw controls in the first half, allowing the team to stay close with ball control.
In goal, freshman Lauren Marron (Macungie/Emmaus) stopped nine shots while Kirstin Mayberry saved 10 for the Warriors.
Shippensburg returns to action on Thursday when it travels to Bloomsburg to take on the Huskies who are currently in third-place in the PSAC standings. Heading into Thursday's games, the Lady Raiders and Millersville are currently one game behind Bloomsburg for third after the Huskies lost at Lock Haven this afternoon.
While Shippensburg plays at Bloomsburg Thursday, Millersville travels to sixth-place Indiana (Pa.). A Lady Raider win and Millersville win would create a three-way tie for third-place in the conference with Shippensburg, Bloomsburg and Millersville all vying for the final two playoff spots headed in the final day of the regular-season on Saturday.
