Bergstrom, Franzen Highlight Career Day for Women's Lacrosse in 20-1 Victory

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - Led by four goals from sophomore Hannah Sperber (Millersville, Md./Severna Park), the Shippensburg women's lacrosse team won its fifth game out of the last seven in convincing fashion with a 20-1 PSAC victory on the road at Slippery Rock Sunday afternoon.
With the win, the Lady Raiders (6-6, 5-4 PSAC West) maintained their hold on fourth-place in the PSAC and the final playoff spot for the PSAC Women's Lacrosse Championship which begins in 16 days on May 1.
Shippensburg is one-game behind Bloomsburg for third and one-game ahead of Indiana (Pa.) and Millersville who are tied for fifth.
In two games against Slippery Rock (0-10, 0-9 PSAC) this season, the Lady Raiders have outscored The Rock, 44-4. It was also the third time this season that Shippensburg scored at least 20 goals.
On Sunday, Sperber tallied all four of her goals in the first half, helping Shippensburg build a 10-0 lead en route to a 12-0 halftime margin. Junior Katie Irwin (Aston/Cardinal O'Hara) added two goals in the first half while freshman Erin Bergstrom (Hagerstown, Md./Smithsburg) scored her first career goal with 4:59 remaining.
Bergstrom would add two more in the second half for her first career hat trick. Her second goal with 13:10 left in the game, gave the Lady Raiders a 16-0 lead before Slippery Rock's Sarah Milewski netted her team‚s lone goal with 9:32 to play.
Sophomore Brittany Franzen (Waterford, Va./St. John's at Prospect Hall) also added two goals in the contest, tying her career-high in points with two. All three of her goals this season and four of her five points, have come in two games versus The Rock this season.
Franzen had one goal and one
assist in a 24-3 win against Slippery Rock at home on March 24.
With a goal with 14:15 remaining in the first half, junior Amanda
Vogelsong (Hagerstown, Md./North Hagerstown) netted her first of the season before
adding another in the second half.
In picking up her sixth win of the season, freshman Lauren Marron (Macungie/Emmaus) was forced to make just three saves while allowing one goal. She now has a 6-5 record in her first season in goal for the Lady Raiders.
Meanwhile, Ashley Winkelspecht made 27 saves for Slippery Rock.
Shippensburg, who out-shot The Rock 47-4, return to action on Wednesday when it hosts No. 2-ranked West Chester at Robb Sports Complex beginning at 4:00 p.m.
