Crutchfield Scores Six; Lady Raiders Win Third out of Last Four
Apr. 9, 2006
ERIE, Pa. - For the second-straight game, junior Kristen Crutchfield (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) scored a career-high six goals while the Shippensburg lacrosse team picked up its third win in the last four games 15-13 on Sunday against Mercyhurst at Tullio Field.
In a game that featured 10 ties and eight lead changes, Shippensburg (3-4) used a 6-2 run to come-from-behind for its second road win in as many games.
Crutchfield also added an assist on Sunday for a career-high seven points. In the team's last two games, she has totaled 13 points and 12 goals after she had six goals in a 14-11 loss at home to Millersville on Friday.
With Shippensburg holding a 4-3 lead, Mercyhurst (6-7) scored three-straight goals to take a 6-4 lead lead after a goal by Lindsay Jackson with 5:28 to play in the first half. Crutchfield then scored three consecutive goals in the final 4:23 of the half to put the Lady Raiders ahead at halftime, 7-6.
Mercyhurst tied the game less than a minute into the second half on a goal by Jessie Horeth and later took the lead 10-9 following three-straight goals from Kelsey French. With 14:35 remaining, Alicia Guzzo scored to give the Lakers an 11-9 lead.
Trailing by two, the Lady Raiders' leading scorer, senior Kim Hudicka (Media, Pa./Penncrest), started the team's 6-2 run with her 21st goal of the season just 30 seconds later. Sophomore Kelly Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) and senior Lauren Wells (Royersford, Pa./Spring-Ford) then scored back-to-back goals to put Shippensburg ahead 12-11 at the 7:34 mark.
However, the Lakers would answer with back-to-back goals of their own by Lauren Smith and Angela Schumerth, less than a minute apart, to re-take a 13-12 lead with 5:03 to play.
Crutchfield would score the game-tying goal at 3:32 off an assist from freshman Kelsey Browning (Pottstown, Pa./Pottsgrove) before senior Cristin Marron (Exton, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored the game-winner only 27 seconds later, unassisted. Crutchfield added an insurance goal with 2:05 left to preserve the Lady Raiders the win.
In addition to Crutchfield's six goals, Wells scored three to raise her season total to nine through seven games. Coming into this season, Wells had scored just nine career goals. Marron had a pair of goals, her sixth multi-goal game of the year.
French scored four goals to lead Mercyhurst while Breanna Haggerty added three goals and three assists.
In goal, senior Michelle Mangle (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) made seven saves for Shippensburg as did Mercyhurst's Megan Foley.
The Lady Raiders are back in action on Monday afternoon at Indiana (Pa.). Game time is at 4:00 p.m.
