Women’s Lacrosse Moves Into Third Place in PSAC With Third Straight Win
Apr. 7, 2007
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Behind five goals from junior Kristin Crutchfield (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and 11 saves from freshman Lauren Marron (Macungie/Emmaus), the Shippensburg women’s lacrosse team won its third-straight game by defeating Bloomsburg 11-6 Saturday afternoon at Robb Sports Complex.
The Lady Raiders (4-4, 3-3 PSAC) are now in a four-way tie for third-place in the PSAC with Bloomsburg, Millersville and IUP. All four teams have identical 3-3 conference records.
After the teams exchanged two goals each within the first 12:44 of play, the Lady Raiders reeled off five consecutive tallies to hold a 7-2 lead that they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.
Shippensburg’s third goal of the game came at 15:37, when junior Katie Irwin (Aston/Cardinal O’Hara) scored her 11th goal of the season off a beautiful feed from junior Brita Paul (Salisbury, Md./James Bennett).
The Lady Raiders held a 6-2 lead at halftime after goals from Crutchfield, Paul and freshman Sarah Petrucci (Avondale/Avon Grove). Other Lady Raiders adding a goal were freshman Sandy Sigel (Downingtown/Downingtown) and junior Kelly Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill).
Crutchfield’s five-goal game gives her a total of 34 in just eight contests this season. She has recorded a hat trick in every game this season, and her average of 4.25 goals-per-game is currently second-best in the conference behind West Chester’s Jackie Baker.
Marron’s goaltending was crucial to preserving the victory for the Lady Raiders, as the freshman goaltender faced a barrage of Bloomsburg shots in the second half. The Huskies fired 23 shots toward the cage in the second half, and Marron was forced to make eight saves in the second half.
Bloomsburg (3-5, 3-3 PSAC) was also 0-of-6 on free position shots in the contest.
Shippensburg’s three-game winning streak is its longest since Apr. 13, 2006 as the Lady Raiders remained unbeaten at home. In 2006, the team also won three-straight en route to finishing fourth in the PSAC standings and advancing to its second PSAC Women’s Lacrosse Championship in the last three years.
On Monday, the Lady Raiders travel to Millersville for a crucial contest with the Lady Marauders at 4:00 p.m.
