Second-Half Rally Guides Millersville Past Lady Raiders, Ends Two-Game Win Streak
Apr. 7, 2006
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Junior Kristen Crutchfield (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) totaled a career-high six goals, but the Shippensburg women's lacrosse team could not hold off a late Millersville rally as the team saw its two-game win streak come to an end at home on Friday, 14-11. On Thursday, the Lady Raiders managed to hold off a second-half rally at Bloomsburg en route to a 15-13 road victory.
Shippensburg (2-4, 2-3 PSAC) held a 9-6 lead seven minutes into the second-half before the Marauders scored eight unanswered goals to take a 14-9 lead with just under four minutes to play. During that run, Amy Longenecker and Anna Marmer each totaled two of their team-high three goals.
Crutchfield finally ended the Lady Raiders' 20:22 scoreless drought with her sixth goal, unassisted at 57:09 before sophomore Kelly Erisman (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) tallied her first career goal with 37 seconds remaining.
Millersville (4-5, 3-2 PSAC) took a 2-0 lead less than four minutes into the game on goals by Marmer and Kristen Maze before Shippensburg responded with goals from Crutchfield and senior Kim Hudicka (Media, Pa./Penncrest) to tie the game at 2-2 at 10:10. Hudicka's goal was her team-leading 20th of the season and she now has 28 points on the season.
Each team would then alternate goals before Crutchfield netted her third goal of the first half to give the Lady Raiders a 6-5 halftime lead. Friday marked the first time this season that Shippensburg lost a game after holding a lead at halftime. The team led at the half against East Stroudsburg and Bloomsburg as was tied at 7-7 with then-No. 4-ranked Lock Haven on March 31.
The Lady Raiders opened the second half on a 3-1 run with two goals from Crutchfield and one from sophomore Brita Paul (Salisbury, Md./James Bennett) to increase its lead to three, 9-6 at the 36:47 mark.
Senior Michelle Mangle (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) totaled 10 saves in the loss, her third double-digit save total of the year, two of which have come in the last two games. Meanwhile, Patty Wesolek made eight saves in goal for the Marauders.
Shippensburg travels to Mercyhurst on Sunday for an 11:00 a.m., game with the Lakers.
