Crutchfield, Irwin Highlight Career Day For Women's Lacrosse in Win Over Seton Hill
Apr. 2, 2007
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Led by a career-high 10 points from junior Kristin Crutchfield (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty), the Shippensburg women's lacrosse team snapped a three-game losing streak while remaining unbeaten at home with a 22-5 victory over Seton Hill Monday at Robb Sports Complex.
The win was the third in the last four for Lady Raiders (2-4) against a non-conference opponent.
Crutchfield tied a career-high with six goals while setting a new career-high with four assists. The last time a Shippensburg player scored 10 points was on April 19, 2004 when Hillary Eckert had five goals and five assists in a 20-7 win at Indiana (Pa.).
Crutchfield also scored six goals in back-to-back games a year ago in a 14-11 loss to Millersville at home on April 7 and a 15-13 victory at Mercyhurst on April 9. She also added an assist against Mercyhurst to set her previous career-high of seven points.
Five of Crutchfield's six goals came in the first half, including four in a span of 4:58 as she helped Shippensburg build a commanding 10-2 lead in the first 12:03. Those four goals were part of a 19:26 span in which the Lady Raiders scored 12 consecutive goals to take a 15-2 lead with 5:25 remaining in the first half.
Each team would score once more before the break as Shippensburg led 16-3 at halftime.
In addition to Crutchfield's offensive outbreak, junior Katie Irwin (Aston/Cardinal O'Hara) set a new career-highs with six points and three assists. Prior to Monday, Irwin's previous career-high in points was five when she had three goals and two assists, both career-highs, in a 24-3 victory over Slippery Rock at home earlier this season on March 24.
Irwin also had a career-high three goals in last week's loss at Philadelphia.
Joining Crutchfield and Irwin in setting new career-highs was sophomore Hannah Sperber (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) who netted a career-high in both points and assists, finishing the game with five goals for five points.
Sperber scored just five goals all of last season and had a previous career-high with three points in a 24-10 loss to West Chester at home on March 28, 2006.
Junior Kelly Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) added two more goals against the Griffins to raise her season total to 16 to go along with three assists. Crutchfield leads the team in goals with 26, assists with eight and points, 34.
Also on Monday, freshman Liz DiNunno (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) netted her first career goal, unassisted in the first half at 15:40 to give Shippensburg a 12-2 lead.
The Lady Raiders outshot Seton Hill 45-9 and held a 21-8 advantage in draw controls.
The Griffins (1-9) were led by Krista Ocilka who had three goals while Ellen Einsporn added two.
Shippensburg will look for its first back-to-back wins of the season on Wednesday when it travels to East Stroudsburg for a PSAC game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
