Apr. 2, 2006
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Led by two goals and three assists from junior Kristen Crutchfield (Eldersburg, Pa./Liberty), the Shippensburg University women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the season 12-4 over East Stroudsburg University on Sunday at Robb Sports Complex, snapping an 11-game losing streak that dated back to last season.
On this date exactly one-year ago, the Lady Raiders (1-3, 1-2 PSAC) defeated Indiana University (Pa.) 11-10 at home on for its lone win of the 2005 season. However, during that time, six of Shippensburg's 11 losses came by four goals or less.
Sunday's win also comes just two days after the Lady Raiders nearly upset No. 4-ranked Lock Haven University at home before surrendering a two-goal lead midway through the second half in a 15-13 loss.
After Becca Angelucci gave the Warriors (1-4, 0-3 PSAC) a 3-2 lead with 16:24 left in the first half, Shippensburg scored 10 consecutive goals while holding East Stroudsburg to just one for the remainder of the game. Renee Maniscalco scored the Warriors final goal of the game with 1:35 to play in the game, snapping a 44:49 scoreless streak.
Trailing by one, senior Cristin Marron (Exton, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) and Kim Hudicka (Media, Pa./Penncrest) combined to score the Lady Raiders' next four goals with two each as the team doubled up the Warriors 6-3 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.
Following a goal by sophomore Brita Paul (Salisbury, Md./James Bennett) that gave Shippensburg its largest lead of the year at four, Marron and Hudicka combined to give the team an 8-3 halftime lead.
Hudicka would add two more goals in the second half to finish the game with five points on four goals and an assist while Marron ended with three goals, all of which came in the first half. Paul totaled two goals and sophomore Allie Rutland (Middletown, Md./Middletown) netted her first career goal, scoring the Lady Raiders' first of the game on an assist from Crutchfield.
In goal, senior Michelle Mangle (Philadelphia, Pa./St. Hubert Catholic) earned the victory, stopping five Warrior shots, including four in the second half while her counterpart, Julie Smith, made 23 saves.
After four-straight home games to open the 2006 season, Shippensburg will travel to Bloomsburg University on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m., for its first road contest.
