PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Philadelphia University women's lacrosse team scored nine second half goals, including three from Marissa Wisniewski as the Rams edged out Shippensburg 14-9 to open its 2007 home schedule Thursday afternoon at Ravenhill Field.
The loss was the second-straight for Shippensburg (1-3) who was once again led in scoring by junior Kristin Crutchfield (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) with five goals and one assist to set a new career-high with six points. She has led the team in scoring in three out of four games and now has 17 goals this season.
Junior Katie Irwin (Aston/Cardinal O'Hara) continues to increase her offensive output as she netted her second career hat-trick, scoring three goals while also adding an assist. Through four games, Irwin has totaled seven goals and five assists for a total of 12 points. She entered this season with a total of two goals and one assist combined over her first two seasons.
Both teams traded goals for most of the first half before Philadelphia (2-0) took a 4-3 lead at 22:07 behing Maggie Bornhorst's second goal of the half.
Crutchfield then answered with her second and third goal of the game at 22:53 and 25:03 to put Shippensburg ahead 5-4.
However, Brooke Woodland would score unassisted with just 22 seconds remaining in the half to tie the game at halftime, 5-5.
Wisniewski, who finished the game with four goals along with Bornhorst, scored her second goal only 47 seconds into the second half to give the Rams the lead again, 6-5, but Irwin would tie it at 37:46 with her second goal off an assist from Crutchfield.
Shannon Shippey followed with a goal just 50 seconds later to give Philadelphia its fifth and final lead of the team game as the Rams would score eight of the game's final 11 goals to take the five-goal victory.
Despite the back-and-forth pace, the Lady Raiders led for a total of only 5:09 in the contest as Philadelphia always had a quick response following a Shippensburg goal.
When Irwin scored at 21:19 to give the Lady Raiders a 3-2 lead, the Rams countered with a goal 34 seconds later to tie it at 3-3 and when Crutchfield scored at 25:03 to pur Shippensburg ahead 5-4, Philadelphia netted the tying goal 4:35 later to tie the game at halftime.
Then, in the second half, Irwin's game-tying goal at 37:46 was followed by Shippey's goal 50 seconds after to put the Rams back in front.
Irwin's third goal came at 43:00 off an assist from junior Kelly Smith (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) to cut the Lady Raider deficit to one at 8-7, but Bornhorst scored the first of back-to-back goals for the Rams at 45:18 to give them a three-goal lead, one that they would not let slip below two the rest of the game.
Freshman Lauren Marron (Macungie/Emmaus) made her third start in goal for Shippensburg and totaled 12 saves which is average this season as she now has 37 in three games.
Elizabeth Hulfish started the game in goal for Philadelphia and made nine saves before being relieved by Kelly Staerk who earned the victory, totaling one save while allowing just three goals in the final 22:14.
Philadelphia's big three of Wisniewski, Bornhorst and Allison Kessler totaled 10 of the Rams' 14 goals and just two games this season, have totaled 18 of the team's 36.
Things don't get any easier for Shippensburg as it returns to action on Saturday in its fourth road game out of five this season at No. 5-ranked Lock Haven. Game time from Hubert Jack Stadium and Charlotte Smith Field is at 1:00 p.m.
