March 28, 2006
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. -
Katelyn Martin scored seven goals as the No. 7-ranked West Chester University
women's lacrosse team defeated Shippensburg University 24-10 on Tuesday
afternoon at Robb Sports Complex in the Lady Raiders' Pennsylvania State
Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener.
Senior Cristin Marron (Exton, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) scored three goals
to lead Shippensburg (0-2, 0-1 PSAC) who has now lost 10-straight games.
The team's last win came at home to Indiana University (Pa.) 11-10 on April
2, 2005.
The Golden Rams (4-2, 1-1 PSAC) outscored the Lady Raiders 11-2 in the
second half to break open a five-goal halftime lead. In addition to Martin's
seven goals, Jackie Baker and Christine Kane each scored four while Stephanie
Clifton and Mandy Masoner had three apiece.
West Chester's 24 goals were the most the team has scored since a 25-8
victory over IUP on April 14, 2005, a span of 15 games. In the last three
meetings against Shippensburg, the Golden Rams have outscored the Lady
Raiders, 62-16.
Martin scored four of the first five goals for West Chester as it held
a 5-1 lead just 4:11 into the game. However, back-to-back by freshman Beth
Long (Berwyn, Pa./Conestoga) and senior Kim Hudicka (Media,
Pa./Penncrest) pulled Shippensburg within two, 5-3.
The Golden Rams scored six of the game's next seven goals to run their
lead to seven at 11-4, but the Lady Raiders would answer with four goals
over the next five minutes, including two from Marron, to creep back to
within four 12-8.
However, with only 11 seconds remaining, Martin scored her sixth goal of
the half to give West Chester a five-goal lead at halftime.
Nine different players scored for the Golden Rams, including eight in the
second half while Chelsea Marshall made eight saves to pick up her fourth
win of the season.
For Shippensburg, Hudicka and freshman Kristen Crutchfield (Eldersburg,
Md./Liberty) each scored twice for Shippensburg with Hudicka also adding
two assists. In goal, senior Michelle Mangle (Philadelphia, Pa./St.
Hubert Catholic) made 10 saves.
The Lady Raiders return to action on Friday when they host fourth-ranked
Lock Haven University at Robb Sports Complex beginning at 4:00 p.m. The
Lady Eagles are 5-0 overall this season, 2-0 in the PSAC and handed West
Chester its first conference loss since 2003 earlier this season.
