Lady Raiders Dominate Slippery Rock in Home Opener, 24-3

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. - The Shippensburg women's lacrosse team rebounded after a difficult season-opening loss to Indiana (Pa.) Wednesday with a dominating performance in its home opener on Saturday, defeating Slippery Rock by a score of 24-3.
Several Lady Raiders (1-1, 1-1 PSAC) contributed to the offensive birage, led by sophomore Kelsey Browning (Sanatoga/Pottsgrove) and junior Kelly Erisman (Lancaster/Manheim Township) who each had four goals.
Meanwhile, juniors Kristin Crutchfield (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty) and Kelly Smith (Crownsville, Md/Old Mill) added three goals apiece.
Crutchfield's scored three of the team's first seven goals in the game as Shippensburg raced out to a 6-0 lead within the first 5:54 of play. She and Smith currently lead the team with eight goals this season. Smith also has two assists for a team-high 10 points.
Shippensburg's fourth, fifth and sixth goals were scored in a span of 34 seconds, as junior Katie Irwin (Aston/Cardinal O'Hara), Browning and Crutchfield each netted one. Irwin and Browing scored just nine seconds apart at 5:10 and 5:19, respectively, a mark that is one second shy of the school record.
In 1992, Dana Smondrowski (13:26) and Kathy Frank (13:18) scored goals just eight seconds apart in an 18-7 win over Lock Haven at home.
Later in the game, Smith scored the Lady Raiders' 17th goal at 37:49 before junior Allie Rutland (Middletown, Md./Middletown) netted her first career goal only 11 seconds later at 38:00.
The school record for the fastest three goals scored is 18 seconds, set during the same against Lock Haven in 1992 when Missy Nash added a goal just 10 seconds after Smondrowski's goal at 13:36.
Several Lady Raiders recorded their first career goals in the game, including Rutland, freshman Sandy Sigel (Downington/Downington), sophomore Brittany Franzen (Waterford, Va./St. John's at Prospect Hall), and freshman Leigh Mellon (Paoli/Great Valley).
Also, freshman Katy Myers (Frederick, Md./Thomas Johnson) recorded her first career point with an assist on Browning's fourth goal of the game at 58:12.
Defensively, Mellon led Shippensburg with five ground balls and four draw controls.
In goal, freshman Lauren Marron (Macungie/Emmaus) recorded her first career victory after totaling five saves.
For Slippery Rock (0-2, 0-2 PSAC), Ashley Henry scored her team-leading second goal of the season as three different players tallied one goal each for The Rock. Ashley Winkelspecht stopped 17 Lady Raider shots and now has 36 saves in two games.
Shippensburg will return to action on Tuesday when it travels to West Chester for a game beginning at 4:00 p.m.
