Hanover Native Katie Davis Named Assistant Softball Coach at Shippensburg

Aug. 17, 2006

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg head softball coach Bob Brookens has announced that former Fordham standout and Hanover native Katie Davis has been named as an assistant coach with the Lady Raiders. It is the first coaching position for Davis who will focus on helping improve the team's offense.

"I am extremely happy to have such an accomplished player like Kate on our staff," said Brookens. "I am looking forward to what she can bring to the team in terms of drills and techniques she has used that made her so successful offensively."

Davis will rely on that experience and success as a hitter to help a Shippensburg team that ranked seventh in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) last year in average and runs.

"I have always been a softball player and have always had a passion for the game," Davis said. "That's why I am trying to coach. I feel I can help make other players better."

The 22-year-old graduate of South Western High School recently graduated from Fordham University in July with a bachelor of science degree in psychology. The 2005 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, she had an outstanding senior season for the Rams in 2006, hitting .326 with 15 doubles, eight home runs, 35 RBI and 33 runs scored.

Davis led the team in doubles and ranked second in slugging percentage (.552) as well as third in batting average and fourth in home runs.

Over her three-year career at Fordham, Davis set the school's career marks for home runs (35), RBI (113), slugging percentage (.628) and total bases (321) while ranking second in hits (176) and doubles (38) and third in runs (113) and batting average (.344). She also holds the school single-season record for hits (62), home runs (14), total bases (114) and slugging percentage (.699).

Prior to her arrival at Fordham, Davis played at Ohio University during the 2003 where she batted .270 in 34 games while finishing second on the team in runs (20) and home runs (5). She also hit six doubles and drove in nine RBI.
