May 23, 2007
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg softball senior Katie Heatley (York/Dallastown) was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District II Second Team as part of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) awards program. A criminal justice major, Heatley graduated in May with a 3.80 grade point average.
Heatley was one of just 42 student-athletes selected from 41 colleges and universities in District II that sponsor softball. District II consists of the states of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
The daughter of Leslie Giambalvo and Mark Heatley, Katie has been instrumental in the team’s success during her career with the Lady Raiders, helping the team to two PSAC championship game appearances and back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region Championship in 2005 and 2006.
In three seasons with the Lady Raiders, Heatley appeared in 103 career games while making 93 starts, including 76 at first base.
As a freshman, Heatley played in 15 games at Division I Bucknell before transferring to Shippensburg following the 2004 season.
As a sophomore in 2005, Heatley hit her first career home run, a three-run homer to left, in her first game as a Lady Raider in a victory at Shaw on February 18. As a junior in 2006, she emerged as a full-time starter, appearing in 40 games with 39 starts at first base during which the team had a 24-15 record. She totaled 21 hits and 11 RBIs as Shippensburg won at least 40 games for the third consecutive season.
As a senior and team co-captain this year, Heatley started 52 of the team’s 54 games, including 36 at first base and a team-high 13 at second and three at shortstop. She batted .252 with 38 hits, 19 RBIs and 17 runs, all career-highs.
Meanwhile, Shippensburg finished the season with a 30-24 overall record, its sixth consecutive 30-win season while also making its sixth-straight NCAA regional championship appearance.
In addition to her success on the field, Heatley has been even more so off of it, serving two years as president of the Shippensburg Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, helping to raise over $4,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation which is the official charity of the NCAA in Division II. A two-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, she has been a member of the Dean’s List at both Shippensburg and Bucknell and in 2004, was also selected to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
CoSIDA selects Academic All-America teams in 12 programs: football, women's volleyball, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, softball, men's track and field/cross country, women's track and field/cross country, men's at-large and women's at-large.
A first team, second team and third team are selected in both the University (Division I and I-AA) and College (Division II, III and NAIA) Divisions. Football consists of just first and second teams.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution (thus, true freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible transfers are not eligible).
In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
