KUTZTOWN, Pa. - On
the heels of an eight-run first inning, the Shippensburg softball team
snapped a two-game
losing streak and advanced to the next round of the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic
Region Championship on Friday with a 10-2 victory over Bowie State at Kutzown's
North Campus Field.
With the win, the Lady Raiders (30-23) posted their sixth consecutive 30-win
season in seven years under Head Coach Bob Brookens.
Bowie State (27-9) got on the board with a run in the top of the first on
a sacrifice fly, but Shippensburg responded by sending 13 batters to the
plate in the bottom of the inning.
After Shippensburg loaded the bases on a walk by freshman Lisamarie
Ramagli (Levittown/Neshaminy), sophomore Amanda Bardo (Montoursville/Montoursville) hit a two-out, two-run single to left giving the Lady Raiders a 2-1 lead.
Following an RBI-single by senior Katie Heatley (York/Dllastown) and back-to-back
bases loaded walks by sophomore Lori Knopf (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) and
junior Liz Good (Croydon/Truman) to increase the lead to four, sophomore
Chelsea Carson (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) hit a bases clearing, three-run
triple down the left field line to put Shippensburg ahead 8-1.
Carson, who went 2-for-3 with three RBIs, is currently batting .333 this
season with 13 RBIs while Bardo went 2-for-2 with two runs and two RBIs before
leaving the game in the fourth. Good also had two RBI.
Meanwhile, Ramagli, who went 2-for-3 in yesterday's loss to East Stroudsburg,
was 1-for-2 with a solo home run and a walk on Friday. She is hitting .600
through two games in the regional with a 1.400 slugging percentage.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Tiffany Toney was 3-for-3 with two doubles, a triple
and two runs scored. Tricia Corbin was 2-for-3.
In the circle, Lady Raider junior Jill Kirby (Glen Mills/Garnet Valley) pitched
her fourth complete game of the season, scattering seven hits over five innings
with three strikeouts while allowing just two runs to pick up her third win
of the season.
Heather Enders started the game for Bowie State, but was knocked out after
pitching just two-thirds of an inning, allowing eight runs, only two of which
were earned. Jillian Willey pitched the remainder of the game in relief,
allowing two runs in 3.1 innings.
Shippensburg will play the loser of the Bloomsburg and Edinboro game on Saturday
morning at 11:30 a.m. The game can be heard live on student radio station
