Apr. 28, 2006

Game 1 | Game 2

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The No. 14-ranked Shippensburg softball team fell into a first-place tie atop the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division after a doubleheader split with East Stroudsburg on Friday at Zimbar Field.

The Lady Raiders (35-15, 16-6 PSAC East) won game one 1-0 behind 13 strikeouts from senior Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School of Baltimore), but fell in game two 3-0 after two Warrior solo home runs.

Heading into the final day of the regular season on Saturday, Shippensburg is tied with Bloomsburg for first-place as both teams have identical 16-6 divisional records. The Lady Raiders face Millersville at home tomorrow on Senior Day while the Huskies host East Stroudsburg.

In the event of a tie, Shippensburg would get the No. 1-seed in the Eastern Division for next week's PSAC championship by virtue of the team's three wins against third-place Kutztown who took three out of four games from the Huskies this season.

Tiesi dominated East Stroudsburg in game one improving her record to 22-5 on the year with a complete-game, one-hit shutout. The win was the 96th of her career and also the 50th shutout. She now has 1,014 strikeouts and is just five behind Lindsey Graham of North Dakota State on the all-time Division II list.

The Lady Raiders got all the runs they would need in the top of the first after junior Heather Chantiles (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) led off with a single then stole second. Freshman Rachelle Wedell (Baltimore, Md./Northeast) then drove in Chantiles with her 23rd RBI of the season.

Tiesi faced just two batters over the minimum in seven innings as Lindsey Kost reached on an error in the third and Jennifer Veronesi singled in the fourth.

Shippensburg totaled eight hits in the first game, but managed only the one run after stranding seven runners on base and going just 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

In game two, the Warriors (26-23, 10-12 PSAC) limited the Lady Raiders to three hits in 23 at bats as just two players had a hit for Shippensburg in senior Kristen Marll (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and freshman Krystal Shannon (Portland, Maine/South Portland).
Kristen Halvorsen pitched a complete game and had four strikeouts for East Stroudsburg to even her record at 6-6.

Despite 10 strikeouts, the Warriors scored three runs on just four hits against Lady Raider sophomore Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech). Two of East Stroudsburg's thre
e runs came on solo home runs in the third and fifth innings by Ashley Miller and Veronesi, respectively.

Shippensburg, which has taken splits in four of its last five doubleheaders, will look to secure the Eastern Division‚s No. 1-seed in next week's PSAC championship with two wins at home versus Millersville on Saturday beginning at 1:00 p.m. In between games, the team will honor seniors Kristen Marll and Kelley Tiesi who will be playing in their final regular-season home games at Robb Field.
