Lady Raiders Open PSAC Championship With Convincing Win

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Exploding for 10 runs off 14 hits including a 3-for-3 performance by senior Sarah Costa (Laurel, Md./Atholton), the Shippensburg University softball team won its first game of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship, 10-2, over Indiana University (Pa.) on Thursday afternoon at Robb Field.
Indiana (Pa.) (22-14) defeated Kutztown University, 6-2, earlier in the day to advance in the bracket to play Shippensburg.
The Lady Raiders took a 3-0 lead in the second inning. A two-RBI triple down the left field line by junior Kristin Marll (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) gave the Shippensburg its first runs of the game, after Costa and senior Jessica Miller (Easton, Pa./Easton) each singled to reach base. Senior Steph Reavey (Swarthmore, Md./Ridley) singled through the right side to score Marll.
The Lady Raiders added a run in the third inning with Costa hitting an RBI-single up the middle to score senior Ann Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), who doubled to lead off the inning. Costa would drive in three runs total in the game, scoring once.
A four-run fourth inning increased the Shippensburg (38-3) lead to 8-0. Big hits in the inning included a two-RBI single by Costa that scored senior Jaime Dacey (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and Ann Corr. Dacey also had an RBI-single in the inning.
The Indians scored a run in the fifth and sixth innings, cutting the Lady Raider lead to six, 8-2. Melissa Klingensmith hit a single up the middle to score Julie Huebner in the fifth inning while Huebner hit an RBI-double to left field in the sixth.
Shippensburg scored two more runs in the sixth inning to end the game. Senior Liz Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Doylestown) and senior Beth Rudai (Glen Mills, Pa./University High, Ill.) each singled to start the inning. Ann Corr reached base on an error, sending sister Liz in to score. Rudai slid under the tag to score the final run of the game on Dacey’s fielder choice.
Junior Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School of Baltimore) pitched four innings, allowing two hits while striking out seven. Freshman Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) pitched the final two innings.
Shippensburg faces Lock Haven University at 2 p.m. on Friday in its next game. The winner of that game will move on to the championship game on Saturday.
