Friday's Senior Day Softball Doubleheader With East Stroudsburg Moved to 1:00 PM

Apr. 26, 2007

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Friday's key PSAC Eastern Division softball doubleheader between Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg at Robb Field on Senior Day, originally scheduled for 2:30 p.m., has been moved to 1:00 p.m., because of the threat of inclement weather.

In ceremonies between games, the team will honor senior Katie Heatley (York/Dallastown) who will be playing in her final two games at home as a Lady Raider.

Shippensburg (27-20, 10-10 PSAC East) and East Stroudsburg (20-21, 12-8 PSAC East) are separated by just two games heading into Friday’s doubleheader. With a record of 12-8 in the PSAC Eastern Division, the Warriors currently hold the third and final playoff spot from the division into the PSAC Softball Championship which begins next Thursday, May 3 at Kutztown.

A sweep by the Lady Raiders would move the two teams into a tie for third-place headed into the final day of the regular-season on Saturday when Shippensburg travels to fifth-place Millersville and East Stroudsburg hosts second-place Bloomsburg who has already secured the Eastern Division’s No. 2-seed.

On Friday, Millersville plays at Kutztown while Bloomsburg has the day off. The Lady Raiders swept two games from Millersville back on Friday, April 13. Meanwhile, East Stroudsburg lost both games at Bloomsburg this past Sunday.

Should the Lady Raiders advance to the PSAC Softball Championship, it would be their seventh consecutive appearance.

Behind 11 strikeouts from junior Dani Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech), Shippensburg split a doubleheader at East Stroudsburg on April 10, winning game one 3-1 before a walk-off single gave the Warriors a 6-5 victory in game two.

Shields allowed just three hits and one earned run in seven innings, but walked four in picking up her 10th win of the season.

Offensively for the Lady Raiders, freshman Nicole Henninger (Reading/Muhlenberg) was 2-for-4 with an RBI-single in game one while sophomore Chelsea Carson (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) finished the second game 2-for-3 with a double and sophomore Rachelle Wedell (Baltimore, Md./Northeast) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.

With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh, East Stroudsburg’s Jen Veronesi led off with a triple off the right field wall before Jess Schmoyer ended the game during the next at-bat with a walk-off RBI-single to center field, scoring Veronesi.

On Wednesday, Shippensburg moved back into the NFCA Division II Top 25 at No. 25 while moving up two spots in the NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region poll to fourth.
