Chantiles Ties Single-Season Hit Record in Split at West Chester
Apr. 21, 2006
WEST CHESTER, Pa. - With an RBI-single
in the top of the seventh in game one, junior Heather Chantiles (Harrisburg,
Pa./Central Dauphin) tied the Shippensburg softball single-season record
for hits as the Lady Raiders split a doubleheader at West Chester on Friday,
winning game one 3-0 before dropping game two, 6-2.
The loss for Shippensburg (31-13, 12-4 PSAC East) in game two ended a 10-game
win streak for the team against West Chester dating back to April 14, 2003.
It was also the first victory for the Golden Rams against the Lady Raiders
at home since 1999, snapping a 13-game losing streak.
Chantiles, who went 1-for-4 in the first game, now has 78 hits on the season,
tying her with Jaime Dacey who also had 78 last season. However, the hit
was her only one of the day as her 10-game hitting streak came to an end
in game two as she went 0-for-3. The 10-game hit streak was the second double-digit
streak for Chantiles this season as she totaled at least one hit in 15 consecutive
games earlier this year.
Shippensburg entered the game with a two-game lead over second-place Kutztown
in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division standings,
but is now just one-game ahead of the Golden Bears heading into Sunday's
rescheduled doubleheader at Robb Field. Kutztown, who was idle on Saturday,
enters Sunday with a mark of 11-5 in the Eastern Division.
The Lady Raiders tallied three runs in the first game on just four hits and
scored what proved to be the game-winning run in the top of the first when
freshman Rachelle Wedell (Baltimore, Md./Northeast) scored an unearned run
after freshman Lori Knopf (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) reached on an error
by the right fielder.
In the fifth, Chantiles drove in the first of her two RBI with a ground out
to shortstop that scored freshman Amanda Bardo (Montoursville, Pa./Montoursville) from third after she led off the inning with a triple. Chantiles then tied
the single-season hit record in the seventh, scoring freshman Chantal
Gross (Hanna, Ind./South Central).
In the circle, senior Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School
of Baltimore) scattered five hits while striking out eight in picking up her 93rd career
win in her 100th career start. With four regular-season doubleheaders remaining,
Tiesi has 982 career strikeouts as she is trying to become just the seventh
player in Division II history to reach 1,000.
Meanwhile, Adina DeHainaut allowed just four hits in game one for West Chester
(20-12, 3-15 PSAC East) as the team ended a five-game conference losing streak.
DeHainaut, who started back-to-back games for the second time this season
and the first since
March 25 against Lock Haven, ended a four-game losing
streak with the victory in game two, despite allowing three times as many
hits, 12. However, she received a little help from the Shippensburg offense
which was only 4-for-9 with runners in scoring position.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, the Golden Rams' Katey
Kreider led off the inning with a walk and then stole second before Mandy
Jankowski singled to score Kreider for a 2-1 lead.
Freshman Lauren Plasterer (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg), who entered the
game in relief of sophmore Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex
Tech) in
the fourth, retired six of the first seven batters she faced with the one
reaching on an error before West Chester exploded for four runs in the bottom
of the sixth to put the game away. However, none of the four runs were earned
as Shippensburg committed two of its three errors in the inning.
In her last three starts, Shields has allowed only 13 hits over 15.0 innings
with just two walks while striking out 11, but has been relieved in each
game. During that time, opponents have totaled seven runs, five of which
have been earned. The last time Shields factored into a decision was on April
12, a span of seven games.
On Sunday, Shippensburg will face Kutztown in a crucial doubleheader at Robb
Field beginning at 1:00 p.m. Just one game separates the two teams atop the
PSAC Eastern Division standings. The Golden Bears have won six-straight,
including a sweep of Bloomsburg on April 15. The two teams split a doubleheader
at Kutztown on April 6.
