Shippensburg Sweeps Millersville on Record Setting Day

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Behind the solid
pitching from junior Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School
of Baltimore),
the Shippensburg University softball team
swept a doubleheader with Millersville University, 7-0 and 8-1.
Tiesi started both games, earning the win in both to go to 21-1 on the year.
She came into today with 699 career strikeouts, and struck out Alexa Ashwell,
the third batter in the first game for her 700th career strikeout.
Tiesi had
six strikeouts in game one and five in the second. She currently has 164
strikeouts for the season and 710 for her career. Tiesi gave up a
combined three hits in 10 innings pitched.
Freshman Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) pitched the final
two innings of both games.
At the plate, senior Liz Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) broke
the Shippensburg (37-3, 20-2 PSAC East) career record for at bats with
her first at bat of game one. She currently has 677 at bats for her career,
breaking
the
old
record
of 669, which was set by Heather Bankert (1997-2002).
In addition, senior Jaime Dacey (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop
Wood) drove in four RBIs in game two to bring her single season
total to 54, breaking the Shippensburg record. The old record of 52
RBIs was set in 1999 by Katie Rowlands.
In game one, Shippensburg took a quick lead, scoring three runs in the
first inning. With the bases loaded, senior Sarah Costa (Laurel,
Md./Atholton) hit into a ground out to drive in senior Beth
Rudai (Glen Mills, Pa./University High, Ill.).
Senior Amanda Collins (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop
Spalding) then hit a
double to center field, driving in senior Jaime Dacey (Langhorne,
Pa./Archbishop
Wood) and senior Anna Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West).
Collins went 4-for-4 in the game with three RBI. She also drove in Dacey
in the third inning after Dacey led off the inning with a double.
The Lady Raiders scored runs in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.
Anna Corr hit a triple to right field in the fourth, scoring her sister
Liz. Pinch
runner Caitlin MacPherson (Hemlock, N.Y./Monroe C.C.) scored a run when
senior Kristin Marll (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) hit a single to
third base
to drive home a run in the fifth inning.
In the seventh, senior Steph Reavey (Swarthmore,
Pa./Ridley) drew a walk
with the bases loaded, scoring Costa.
With no score through two innings in the second game, Shippensburg
exploded with a four-run third inning. Anna Corr hit a bases loaded
single to
left, driving home sophomore Heather Chantiles (Harrisburg,
Pa./Central Dauphin) and Liz Corr. Rudai scored on a wild pitch and Dacey completed the
scoring with a ground out that scored Anna Corr.
Dacey hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give the Lady
Raiders a 7-0 lead.
Millersville (13-26, 4-16) cut into the lead in the sixth inning with four-straight
singles, sending Kristen Moser across the plate to put the Shippensburg
advantage
at 7-1.
Freshman Sarah Stengl (Dunvansville, Pa./Holidaysburg) capped the scoring
with an RBI-double to right field, scoring sophomore Katie
Heatley (York, Pa./Bucknell University).
Dacey went 3-for-3 with four RBI while Anna Corr was 2-for-3 with two
RBI.
Shippensburg will play its final regular-season games on Saturday at
Bloomsburg University. The Lady Raiders have clinched a spot in the
upcoming Pennsylvania
State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament and will be looking for
home field advantage against the Huskies.
