Lady Raider Softball Sweeps No. 16 Bloomsburg, Ranked Sixth in Mid-Atlantic Region
Apr. 18, 2007
SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - A four-run rally
in the bottom of the seventh of game one and strong pitching in game two,
lifted the Shippensburg softball team to a doubleheader sweep of 16th-ranked
Bloomsburg Wednesday afternoon at Robb Field, 4-3 and 2-0.
With the wins, the Lady Raiders (23-16, 6-6 PSAC East) have won six of the
their last seven and are now in fourth-place in the PSAC Eastern Division,
one-game behind the Huskies for the division's third and final berth
into the 2007 PSAC Softball Championship to be held at Kutztown May 3-5.
Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh in game one, Shippensburg scored
four runs, the last two coming on a two-run single through the left side
by junior Sarah Stengl (High Springs, Fla./Hollidaysburg (Pa.)) to win the
game for the Lady Raiders.
After Bloomsburg (21-10, 7-5 PSAC East) pitcher Ashley Lynn held Shippensburg
scoreless and just two hits through six innings, the Lady Raiders erupted
for four runs on five hits in the seventh, sending eight batters to the plate.
Sophomore Amanda Bardo (Montoursville/Montoursville) led off the seventh
with a triple to right before scoring on a single to left by freshman Lisamarie
Ramagli (Levittown/Neshaminy).
Junior Jill Kirby (Glen Mills/Garnet Valley), pinch running for Ramagli,
advanced to second on a double to center by sophomore Chantal Gross
(Hanna, Ind./South Central), putting runners on first and second with one out.
Sophomore Lori Knopf (Crown Point, Andrean), pinch hitting for junior Liz
Good (Croydon/Truman), then drove in Kirby with a single to left, cutting
the Bloomsburg lead to one, 3-2.
Shippensburg would load the bases after a walk by sophomore Chelsea
Carson (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) before Stengl's game-winning single scored
Carson and freshman Kiley Abersold (Phillipsburg/Phillipsburg Osceola).
Stengl and Ramagli combined for four of the Lady Raiders' seven hits
with Ramagli going 2-for-3 with one RBI while Stengl finished 2-for-4 with
two RBIs.
In the circle, junior Dani Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) struck out
five and scattered eight hits in earning her 12th win of the season.
Lynn finished with eight strikeouts, but suffered just her second loss in
her last seven decisions and only her third this season.
In game two, Shippensburg scored one run in both the fifth and sixth innings
which proved to be more than enough as Knopf limited the Huskies to just
six hits while striking out three in picking up her second win in as many
decisions.
In the fourth, sophomore Becky Brensinger (Chambersburg/Chambersburg) scored
senior Katie Heatley (York/Dallastown) with an RBI-single down the left field
line before Bardo scored Kirby on a sacrifice fly to center in the sixth.
The Lady Raiders managed both of its runs in game two on just four hits in
the game while leaving five runners on base.
Shippensburg returns to action on Friday, hosting West Chester in a PSAC
Eastern Division doubleheader at Robb Field beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Note: In the latest NCAA Division II Mid-Atlantic Region rankings released
on Wednesday, Shippensburg was ranked sixth, up two spots from last week.
Meanwhile, Bloomsburg was ranked third.
