Solid Pitching Gives Shippensburg Split With East Stroudsburg

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Behind solid pitching, the Shippensburg University softball team split a doubleheader with East Stroudsburg University on Saturday, 12-1 and 1-0. Freshman Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) pitched a one-hitter in game two, but a lack of timely hitting resulted in the loss.
Junior Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School of Baltimore) struck out four batters in the first game and earned the win to go to 19-1 on the year. Senior Anna Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) pitched the final inning, making her first appearance on the mound since 2003.
Shippensburg (35-3, 18-2 PSAC East) scored at least two runs in each inning, beginning with a five-run first inning. With the bases loaded, senior Sarah Costa (Laurel, Md./Atholton) hit a triple, driving in three RBI. She would go 4-for-4 in the contest with four RBI, scoring twice.
Senior Jaime Dacey (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and senior Amanda Collins (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also had RBI singles.
Other big hits came in a three-run fourth inning. Senior Beth Rudai (Glen Mills, Pa./University High, Ill.) hit a RBI-double to left center and Dacey hit a single through the right side that scored Rudai and senior Liz Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West).
Dacey and Liz Corr each went 3-for-4 in the first game.
East Stroudsburg (17-18-1, 7-10-1 PSAC East) used three pitchers and starting pitcher Kristen Halvorsen picked up the loss to fall to 6-10.
In game two, Shields pitched a one hitter with seven strikeouts. The one hit she surrendered, a solo home run to left center by Christine Wontroba in the top of the third inning, was the only score of the game. Shields suffered her first loss and goes to 11-1 on the year.
Shippensburg out-hit East Stroudsburg six to one. The Lady Raiders had the bases loaded in the first inning with one out, but failed to send a runner across the plate. The team left six runners on base.
Wontroba pitched the shutout for East Stroudsburg, going to 7-6 on the year.
Between games, Shippensburg recognized its 10 seniors as well as alumni that attended the game.
Shippensburg travels to Millersville University on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The Lady Raiders defeated the Marauders, 5-0 and 5-4, in the first meeting between the two teams.
