SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Clutch hitting, as well as solid pitching, led the Shippensburg University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of conference-rival Bloomsburg University, 1-0 and 3-2, Friday at Robb Sports Complex. Senior Jamie Dacey (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Wood) scored the winning run in game one and drove in the winning run in game two.

In the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II Poll released on Wednesday, April 6, Shippensburg (29-1, 12-0 PSAC East) is ranked at No. 5 while Bloomsburg (25-5, 6-4 PSAC East) is ranked at No. 13.

Both games were decided in the final outs of regulation play. Senior Sarah Costa (Laurel, Md./Atholton) drove in Dacey for the winning run in the first game, while Dacey had the RBI hit in game two, sending senior Liz Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) across the plate for the victory.

With two outs in game one, Dacey hit a line drive double to the gap in right center field. Costa stepped up and hit a bloop single to short right center to drive in Dacey.

The game featured a classic pitching dual, with Shippensburg’s Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School of Baltimore) and Bloomsburg’s Amanda Smith going scoreless through the first six innings.

Tiesi (16-1) had a no-hitter going before Kelly Zarski led off the seventh with a line drive single to third base. She was sacrificed over by Dee Wolf, and Sara Roba’s single up the middle put runners at the corners with one out. Tiesi got out of the jam with strikeouts of Sarah McDaniel and pinch hitter Jen Probst. She struck out 13 in the victory.

Smith got the loss for the Huskies, and goes to 8-2. She surrendered one run on seven hits, striking out nine.

Shippensburg started the game off strong at the plate, with seniors Liz Corr and Beth Rudai (Glen Mills, Pa./University High, Ill.) each hitting singles to lead off the game. The Lady Raiders loaded the bases in each of the first two innings, but failed to capitalize. Shippensburg would leave 11 runners on base throughout the game.

Dacey led the Lady Raiders at the plate, going 2-for-4.

In the second game, Shippensburg held a 2-0 lead before Bloomsburg’s Sara Roba tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh off a two-run home run that was just fair over the left field fence.

The Lady Raiders came back in the bottom of the inning. Liz Corr led off the inning with a double to left center field. She advanced to third when Anna Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) reached on an error by shortstop Amanda Breon before Dacey had the game winning hit, a single through the left side.

Freshman Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) (9-0) gave up three hits in the game, striking out nine. She was relieved in the seventh inning by Tiesi, who retired the final two batters and earned the win to go to 16-1 on the year.

Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Costa scored the first run of the game after leading off the inning with a double, scoring on a sacrifice fly by senior Fawn Gaidos (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest).

The Lady Raiders increased their lead to 2-0 in the fifth. Rudai reached base on an error. She scored when left fielder Tara Emery dropped the ball on Dacey’s at bat.

Liz Corr went 3-for-4 in the victory. She also scored a run.

The Lady Raiders return home tomorrow to take on West Chester University on Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m. Shippensburg defeated the Golden Rams 8-0 and 16-0 in the first meeting between the two teams.
