Ship Takes Two at East Stroudsburg, Comes-From-Behind in Game Two

EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University softball team swept a conference doubleheader with East Stroudsburg on Friday afternoon, winning the first game 13-1, then coming from behind to defeat the Warriors 8-7 in game two.
Shippensburg (23-1, 8-0 PSAC East) pulled out to a quick 3-1 lead after two innings. Senior Jessica Miller (Easton, Pa./Easton) drove in the first two runs of the game with a single that sent home senior Jaime Dacey (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Wood) and senior Sarah Costa (Laurel, Md./Atholton). Sophomore Ali Morris (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks East) also had an RBI ground out, driving in sophomore Heather Chantiles (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin).
East Stroudsburg (11-12-1, 1-4-1 PSAC East) scored in the bottom of the second when Jodi Buffington scored on a passed ball.
The Lady Raiders broke the game open with a seven run fourth inning, taking advantage of four errors made by the Warriors. Costa had two hits in the inning, leading off the inning with a triple, and later singling to send a run across the plate. Chantiles, Morris, Dacey, and seniors Liz and Anna Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) each had a hit in the inning.
Shippensburg scored three more runs in the final inning, when Dacey hit a bases loaded triple to center field. It is the 20th triple of her career, breaking the Shippensburg career record for triples. The old record of 19 was set by Denise Stephen from 1988-91.
Costa led the team at the plate in the first game, going 3-for-4, scoring two runs with a RBI. Dacey went 2-for-3 and had three RBIs.
Junior Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School of Baltimore) gave up four hits in the game, with one unearned run. She struck out five in the contest.
In game two, Shippensburg was down 7-4 going into the final inning before scoring four runs in the top of the seventh off a pair of homeruns from Anna Corr and Costa. Liz Corr and Rudai each singled to lead off the inning before Anna Corr hit a three-run home run over the left field wall to tie the game 7-7. Two batters later, Costa gave Shippensburg the 8-7 lead with a homerun to left field.
Tiesi, pitching in relief, retired the final three batters in the game for the victory. She pitched 4.1 innings of the game, surrendering three runs and striking out three. Starting pitcher freshman Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) pitched the first 2.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits, striking out three.
East Stroudsburg took a 4-3 lead in the third inning, when Buffington hit a three-run home run to left center field. The Warriors continued their assault in the fourth inning when Ashley Miller drove in two RBIs with a single for a 6-3 lead.
The Lady Raiders gained ground with a run in the fifth when Costa hit a double to left center that scored Dacey, before a home run in the sixth inning by East Stroudsburg’s Christine Wontroba erased the advantage, giving the Warriors a 7-4 lead before Shippensburg’s comeback in the seventh.
Costa went 4-for-4 in the second game, with two RBIs. Anna Corr went 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
The Lady Raiders face Millersville University at home on Saturday in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) doubleheader. Game time is at 1:00 p.m., at Robb Sports Complex.
