Tiesi, Shields Strike Out 23 In Shutout Wins Against Mansfield

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa.---Freshman Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) pitched the first no-hitter of her collegiate career in the second of a pair of shutout victories for the Shippensburg University women’s softball team over Mansfield on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Raiders won the first game 6-0, and the second 7-0.
It is the fourth straight shutout victory for Shippensburg (21-1, 6-0 PSAC East), after defeating West Chester 8-0 and 16-0 over the weekend. The victory is Shippensburg’s 12th straight win.
In the first game, junior Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School of Baltimore) struck out twelve and gave up five hits. Tiesi goes to 10-1 for the season.
Shippensburg took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when senior Anna Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) tripled, and crossed the plate on a passed ball.
The Lady Raiders scored three more runs in the fourth inning. Senior Beth Rudai (Glen Mills, Pa./University High, Ill.) hit a bases loaded double to the gap in right center field, sending home senior Liz Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West), senior Kristin Marll (Severn, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and freshman Liz Good (Croydon, Pa./Truman) to take a 4-0 lead.
Senior Jamie Dacey (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Wood) added two insurance runs with a two-run homerun over the center field fence in the bottom of the sixth.
Rudai and Dacey led Shippensburg at the plate, each going 3-for-4. Rudai had three RBIs, while Dacey drove in two RBIs and scored a run.
Alison Tagliaferri (1-1) got the loss for Mansfield (13-1, 0-2 PSAC East).
Shields struck out 11 in the no-hit performance in the second game, with the only blemish a walk she surrendered in the first inning. She remains undefeated with a 9-0 record.
At the plate, the Lady Raiders scored four runs in the third inning, added three in the bottom of the sixth for the win.
In the third inning, Liz Corr and Rudai each reached base with singles. After battling Mansfield pitcher Amy Martino to a 3-2 count and fouling off several pitches, Anna Corr drove in Liz Corr and Rudai with a double to left field. Anna Corr would score with an RBI single from senior Sarah Costa (Laurel, Md./Atholton). An error by Mansfield shortstop Kris Kelly sent Dacey, who had reached base with a single, across the plate for the fourth run of the inning.
The Corr sisters and Rudai also got the ball rolling in the sixth inning for Shippensburg. Liz Corr singled through the right side, and Rudai singled to shortstop, and Anna Corr’s third extra base hit of the game, a triple to left center field, sent both of them across the plate. Anna Corr scored when Dacey singled up the middle.
Anna Corr led Shippensburg, going 3-for-3 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Dacey went 2-for-2 with an RBI. She also scored a run.
Martino got the loss for Mansfield in the second game, she goes to 4-1 on the season.
Shippensburg will take on East Stroudsburg University at the Warriors field on Friday, April 1. Gametime is at 2:00 p.m.
