TAKOMA PARK, Md. - The 19th-ranked Shippensburg softball team won its third-straight game and fifth out of the last six in convincing fashion on Monday, sweeping a doubleheader at Columbia Union, 19-1 and 8-1.

The Lady Raiders (12-6) were led by senior co-captain Katie Heatley (York/Dallastown) who went 5-for-8 with a double and two RBIs while freshman Nicole Henninger (Reading/Muhlenberg) totaled four more hits, including a two-run homer and two RBIs.

Through 18 games this season, Heatley is batting a career-high .327 with nine RBIs which currently ranks third on the team.

In addition, junior Sarah Stengl (High Springs, Fla./Hollidaysburg (Pa.)) had two home runs on Monday, hitting a two-run homer in game one before going 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the second game.

Junior Jill Kirby (Glen Mills/Garnet Valley) picked up her first victory of the season in the circle, totaling six strikeouts, one shy of her career-high, and allowing just one hit in five innings in game one. Her career-high of seven strikeouts came back on Apr. 5, 2005 in a 9-1 victory over Shepherd at Robb Field in her first career start and first career victory.

Heatley was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in game one while sophomore co-captain Amanda Bardo (Montoursville/Montoursville) also went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and three RBIs. A total of 14 players had at least one-hit for Shippensburg as it totaled 19 runs on 19 hits, both season-highs.

Sophomore Kelly Nelson (Warminster/William Tennent) added a three-run homer and three RBIs and now leads the team with 14 RBIs this season.

In game two, Henninger led the way by going 2-for-3 to raise her season hit total to 24 with a team-high five home runs. Sophomores Chantal Gross (Hanna, Ind./South Central) and Rachelle Wedell (Baltimore, Md./Northeast) each went 2-for-3 with one RBI while Gross added a double.

Junior Dani Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) started the game and pitched three no-hit innings and struck out eight, but sophomore Lauren Plasterer (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) earned the victory by throwing the final four innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run while striking out six.

Shippensburg returns to action on Friday when it opens play in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia against Ashland (Ohio) at 4:00 p.m.
