Lady Raider Softball Sweeps Doubleheader at Columbia Union, 19-1 and 8-1

TAKOMA PARK, Md. - The
19th-ranked Shippensburg softball team won its third-straight game and
fifth out of the last six in convincing
fashion on Monday, sweeping a doubleheader at Columbia Union, 19-1 and
8-1.
The Lady Raiders (12-6) were led by senior co-captain Katie Heatley
(York/Dallastown) who went 5-for-8 with a double and two RBIs while freshman Nicole
Henninger (Reading/Muhlenberg) totaled four more hits, including a two-run homer
and two RBIs.
Through 18 games this season, Heatley is batting a career-high .327 with
nine RBIs which currently ranks third on the team.
In addition, junior Sarah Stengl (High Springs, Fla./Hollidaysburg
(Pa.)) had two home runs on Monday, hitting a two-run homer in game one before
going 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the second game.
Junior Jill Kirby (Glen Mills/Garnet Valley) picked up her first victory
of the season in the circle, totaling six strikeouts, one shy of her
career-high, and allowing just one hit in five innings in game one. Her
career-high of seven strikeouts came back on Apr. 5, 2005 in a 9-1 victory
over Shepherd at Robb Field in her first career start and first career
victory.
Heatley was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs in game one while sophomore
co-captain Amanda Bardo (Montoursville/Montoursville) also went 3-for-4
with a solo home run and three RBIs. A total of 14 players had at least
one-hit for Shippensburg as it totaled 19 runs on 19 hits, both season-highs.
Sophomore Kelly Nelson (Warminster/William Tennent) added a three-run
homer and three RBIs and now leads the team with 14 RBIs this season.
In game two, Henninger led the way by going 2-for-3 to raise her season
hit total to 24 with a team-high five home runs. Sophomores Chantal
Gross (Hanna, Ind./South Central) and Rachelle Wedell (Baltimore, Md./Northeast) each went 2-for-3 with one RBI while Gross added a double.
Junior Dani Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) started the game and pitched
three no-hit innings and struck out eight, but sophomore Lauren
Plasterer (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) earned the victory by throwing the final
four innings, allowing just one hit and one unearned run while striking
out six.
Shippensburg returns to action on Friday when it opens play in the West
Virginia Wesleyan Tournament at Moyer Sports Complex in Salem, Virginia
against Ashland (Ohio) at 4:00 p.m.
