Shippensburg Totals 30 Hits, 24 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep of Queens (N.Y.)

CLERMONT, Fla. - The Shippensburg University softball team opened its first day of nine in Florida with an explosive offensive performance, compiling 30 hits and 24 runs in a doubleheader sweep of Queens (N.Y.) by scores of 10-2 and 14-0 on Friday at the National Training Center.

The Lady Raiders have now won four consecutive games and totaled 53 hits over that span.

Junior Lori Knopf (Crown Point, Ind./Andrean) finished the day reaching base in eight of nine plate appearances with a home run,five RBIs and six runs scored while senior Sarah Stengl (High Springs, Fla./Holidaysburg (Pa.) and freshman Moira Johnsen (Newtown/Council Rock North) each delivered four hits between the two games.

In game one, the Lady Raiders fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first, but quickly responded for five runs in the bottom half of the inning.

With one out and the bases empty, junior Rachelle Wedell (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) smacked a double over the head of the center fielder and disciplined at-bats from senior Amanda Bardo (Montoursville/Montoursville) and Knopf resulted in walks and a bases-loaded situation for Shippensburg.

Freshman Courtney Steele (Manassas Park, Va./Manassas Park) immediately delivered a line-drive single through the middle to score Wedell and Bardo. Freshman Hope Cornell (Dagsboro, Del/Sussex Tech) drew a walk and Stengl sent a ball through the left side that scored Knopf.

The five-run first was capped off with a bases-loaded walk from sophomore Lisamarie Ramagli (Levittown/Neshaminy) that scored Steele and an RBI-fielder’s choice from senior Liz Good (Croydon/Truman) that plated Cornell.

In the bottom of the second, Knopf clubbed an RBI-double that scored Bardo after her second walk of the afternoon to make the score 6-1.

The Knights crushed a home run in the top of the sixth to make the score 6-2, but Shippensburg ended the game early in the bottom of the inning when Cornell smacked a three-run homer to left field that scored Knopf and Johnsen to make the score 9-2.

After the round-tripper, sophomore Oceanna DeBaro (Milton/Milton) singled and Ramagli drew her second walk of the afternoon to leave runners on first and second. Freshman Maggie Sander (Williamsport/Jersey Shore) ended the game with her first hit of the season, an RBI-single up the middle that scored DeBaro.

To start the second game, the Lady Raiders sent 10 batters to the plate in the top of first to continue their momentum from the first game. Freshman Jill Mullan (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) reached on a three-base error and Stengl immediately brought her home with an RBI-single.

Knopf hit an RBI-single up the middle that scored Stengl before Johnsen plated Knopf with an RBI-single and Ramagli brought in Cornell with another single. Junior Chelsea Carson (Shippensburg/Shippensburg) doubled home Ramagli and Johnsen to cap the six-run first.

Knopf destroyed a pitch and deposited it over the left field fence to make the score 8-0 in the second and Shippensburg added six runs over the final two innings before all was said and done.

In the fourth, Bardo, Knopf, and Johnsen all delivered RBI-singles while Cornell hit a sacrifice fly.

The fifth inning featured an RBI-triple from Cornell that scored Sander and Wedell hit an RBI-double into right field that scored Sander.

Shippensburg will engage in three games on Saturday while participating in two different tournaments. The Lady Raiders will travel to the Fortune Road Softball Complex to take on Gannon at 9:00 a.m., and Wayne State at 11:00 a.m., before returning to the National Training Center for a matchup with Bentley at 5:30 p.m.
