Softball Outscores Shaw 56-1 In Season-Opening Doubleheader

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Shippensburg University softball team opened its season on Friday evening with a pair of wins over Shaw University, winning the first game, 29-0, and the second, 27-1.

With Shippensburg (2-0) up 4-0 in the second inning of game one, senior Anna Corr (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) put the game out of reach with a three-run homer to left center field. She went 2-for-2 in the game with four RBI and four runs scored.

Other key hitters included sophomore Katie Heatley (York, Pa./Bucknell University) who had a three-run home run in the fifth inning. Freshman Danielle Shields (Laurel, Del./Sussex Tech) went 2-for-2, scoring twice. Both of her hits went for extra bases, with a two-RBI double in the fourth and a two-run homer in the fifth.

Junior Kelley Tiesi (Baltimore, Md./Catholic School of Baltimore) allowed one hit in five innings while striking out five for her first win of the season.

Game two was highlighted by a 12-run third inning. Senior Fawn Gaidos (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) hit a grand slam in the fifth inning. She also scored four runs.

Senior Sarah Costa (Laurel, Md./Atholton) went 3-for-3 in the second game with three RBI and four runs scored. Senior Jamie Dacey (Langhorne, Pa./Archbishop Wood) had three RBI and scored four runs in the effort while senior Amanda Collins (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding) went 3-for-4 with four RBI.

Junior Caitlin MacPherson (Hemlock, N.Y./Monroe Community College) went the distance on the mound for the Lady Raiders, striking out eight. She gave up just our hits.

The Lady Raiders take on Pfeiffer University on Saturday, February 19 in a doubleheader.
