Thompson Leads Men to Fourth Place Finish at East Region Championships
Nov. 3, 2007
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Shippensburg
University men's cross country junior Steven Thompson (Northumberland/Shikellamy) just
missed earning all-region honors, placing 16th overall to lead the Red
Raiders to a fourth-place team finish at the 2007 NCAA Division II
East Region Championships Saturday afternoon at Lock Haven University.
Shippensburg finished the meet with 130 points while Edinboro won its second
East Region title in the last three years with a total of 47 points, 11 ahead
of second place Slippery Rock. Host Lock Haven came in third with 95 points.
Thompson was the top finisher for Shippensburg for the second-straight week
as he completed the 10k course in 32:03, just three seconds from earning
All-East Region honors which is given to the top 15 finishers. A week ago,
Thompson led all Red Raider runners by finishing 22nd at the PSAC championships.
Freshman Bryan Beegle (Gettysburg/Gettysburg), who was the top Shippensburg
finisher in the team's first six consecutive meets of the season, finished
24th in a time of 32:21, only two seconds ahead of sophomore Jeremy
Brady (Heidelberg AFB/Heidelberg American) who placed 25th.
Junior Phil Diven (Sykesville, Md./South Carroll) and freshman Sean
Stetler (Warrington/Central Bucks South) came in 31st and 34th, respectively, marking
the fourth and fifth Red Raiders to finish in the top-50.
The final two competitors
were freshman Jake Sitler (Wrightsville/York Catholic) who came in 53rd and
sophomore Ryan Boyer (Shamokin/Southern Columbia) who placed 83rd.
Today's meet concludes the 2007 season for Shippensburg and with not a single
senior on its roster, the team should be in great shape for next season as
the Red Raiders return its top seven runners, five of which are going to
be sophomores or juniors. The team will also benefit from the return of sophomore
Josh Neyhart (Kutztown/Kutztown), who missed this season
due to injury.
