Red Raiders Take Second at Alumni Meet, Three Runners Finish in Top 5

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - The Shippensburg University men’s cross country team opened its season Saturday with a second-place finish at the annual Alumni Open. Dickinson earned first place with a team score of 35 points while Shippensburg totaled 44 points and the alumni took third with a total of 69 points.
Dickinson was victorious despite Shippensburg putting
three runners in front of the Red Devils top runner.
The Red Raiders were led by a trio of runners that finished second through
fourth place, all posting times of 19:40. Freshman Bryan Beegle shared the
time along with junior Stephen Thompson (Northumberland/Shikellamy) and sophomore
Josh Neyhart (Kutztown/Kutztown).
Dickinson won the meet based on the balance of its runners. Red Devil runners
placed fifth through 10th with Michael Tarkoff posting the school’s
best time of 19:45.
Frostburg State took fifth place as a team and its
best runner, Bryan Leiter, finished 11th with a time of 20:04.
The top finisher for Shippensburg’s alumni was Matt Wagoner
who led all runners with a time of 19:17. Other alumni included Stephen
LoBianco (12th place, 20:08), Dan Helfrick (16th
place, 20:27) and coach Ed
Boardman (23rd place, 20:41).
Red Raider runners that rounded out the team’s top five included freshmen Sean
Stetler (19th place, 20:29) and Phil Diven (20th
place, 20:35).
The Red Raiders will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 15 at the NYU
Invitational. The meet begins at 10:30 AM.
