Somers Wins Two Events at Dick DeSchriver Invitational

EAST STROUDSBURG , Pa. - Junior John Somers (Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) won two events for Shippensburg as the Raiders competed in the 6th Annual Dick DeSchriver Invitational at East Stroudsburg University on Sunday. No team scores were kept, but Shippensburg came out victorious in several events.
 
Somers finished first in the one-mile run and the 3,000-meter run. He clocked in at 4:18.91 in the mile run and 8:44.37 in the 3,000 meters.
 
In the men's 800-meter run, Shippensburg finished in four of the top seven spots, led by sophomore Greg Weiss (Newfoundland, N.J./West Milford) who crossed the line first with a time of 1:56.49. Junior Kenrick Marsh (Norristown, Pa./Norristown) finished second after posting a time of 1:58.05.
 
Also for the men, senior Adam Escamilla (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) won the shot put event with a throw of 48-feet, 4-inches. Senior Marc Piccolo (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) had a noteworthy finish in the 500-meter run, placing second place at 1:07.39.
 
Two winners emerged for the women including sophomore Monica Speca (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Trinity) who won the high jump with a leap of 5-feet, 6-inches. Sophomore Megan Schweighofer (Tyler Hill, Pa./Honesdale) broke her own school record in the 20-pound weight throw with a toss of 51-feet, 11 1⁄2-inches to finish first. Her throw was only half of an inch off the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championship provisional mark of 52-feet and is the second best throw in the conference this season.
 
Other high placewinners included senior Tunisia Lacy (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) who finished second in the long jump with a distance of 17-feet, 8-inches and junior Lindsey Incorvati (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Township) who came in second in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.22.

Shippensburg returns to action next weekend on Saturday, February 12 at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Challenge hosted by Kutztown University.
